Wow, this sounds like a really interesting book, one that I'd love to read. I have always loved Civil War and Lincoln era novels and I'm so happy to have a copy of this one to read!

I really do not have a lot of knowledge in regards to the American presidents, or this particular era. However, throughout this sample of the book I was able to do a little bit of research so I could understand exactly what was going on. I am not a huge fan of literature of this genre, but the fact that the story was told from the anti-hero’s perspective was interesting and eye opening.

In the novel, the author raises questions about our tendency to cast ourselves as the heroes of our stories even when we are entirely wrong.

This rings so true when we tend to live our lives largely through our own eyes, sincerely believing our perspective to be true and correct. Our biases and prejudices further strengthen this view.

I agree that it is difficult to read about, much less fathom, about the attitudes of racism and discrimination during the Civil War era. Pomeroy denied being a racist, yet hated that the end of slavery would affect many of the landowners and businesses. This book sounds like it may reflect on some of these issues that America was facing during the Civil War times.

The American Civil War is an interesting topic and although it is a fictional story is based on real facts, the questions about the ideological socialist tendencies of Abraham Lincoln, the situations that the United States lived at that time as racism give it a special touch.

This historical fiction novel is told from a slave owner's point of view. So often we are told that Abraham Lincoln was a hero, but it is important to remember that the south perceived him as the destructor of their way of life and livelihood. I love historical fiction and being that I have not read many books during the Civil War era, your well written review has certainly intrigued me! I especially have not read any books about Lincoln and the Tea Movement, so that is an added plus!

I'll be glad to read this book that focuses on true events touching on Lincoln and the American Civil War period. Pomeroy, the main character in the story seems interesting to read about. Nice review.

Pomeroy is the central character, and the book is about his life during those years. While the depicted deeds by him and his TEA Movement were racist and vile, the author led me to a place of compassion when I realized Pomeroy was merely the product of his time and culture. In his pursuit of Lincoln, he was like a dog with a bone.

I think it's a credit to the author when even a racist character can evoke empathy. Thanks for the interesting review.

I've always found Civil War history fascinating, and some of the facts sound even stranger than fiction, which makes this historical period so ripe for authors to tell stories. At first some of the details in the synopsis did not really appeal to me, but then came the part in the plot about finding secret documents in Lincoln's hat, and then I couldn't help but wonder how Selcer will continue this novel. You've made me curious!
