I have to say I found the review more interesting than the sample of the book. Maybe because it is a 'review' of the book. However, the book sparked my interest to read more about the era of Abraham Lincoln, and slavery, so I can then understand the book.

The double life Harlan is leading with such pure love on the one side and complete hatred on the other makes me think that you are completely correct in saying that he is a product of his time and culture. Another reason why parents should teach their children well, with compassion and respect for yourself and one another being on top of the list.

This sounds like a good book for people interested in American history. Not being a fan of historical fiction, I’m going to pass on it for now, but your review is incisive and well-written.

The review of “Lincoln’s Hat and the TEA Movement’s Anger” was just enough information to further whet my curiosity. I’m looking forward to learning more about the main character and the cause of his anger toward Lincoln. There could be many reasons during that disruptive period of American history for anger, and I’ve made some assumptions. Soon I’ll be finding out because I’m excited to start reading this book.

I like historical fictions, especially the thought-provoking and well-researched ones. So I believe I would like reading this one. Thanks for the compelling review.

I love historical fiction, and it's always compelling when a writer gets you to feel compassion for a character whose views go against your own. I'm curious to read it to see how a person like the main character could hold such beliefs--conflicting beliefs, even--and be convinced that they are the hero of their story. (We are all the hero of our own stories, after all.) Thank you for the helpful review.

Although this is not something I would normally read, I can see how this could be interesting. I'm not big on history shamefully, however I can appreciate a story that can get people thinking enough to want to do research on the subject after reading this. Congratulations on BOTD.

The plot-line in this historical fiction is interesting. Also the 4/4 ratings is making me give it a try.

The book sounds an interesting account of a journalist of a civil war period who executed a movement. Great review.

I'm a great history buff, and I can see myself being stimulated to read more about Lincoln's life and assassination. I love when a well-written book can arouse my interest in this manner. Thanks for the lovely review.

This is an amazing piece of historical fiction. The fact that Pomeroy was a "product of his time and culture" makes it even more interesting.

hAn excellent review. What I find so surprising is that nothing changes, Lincoln has connections with a Marxist? Such thoughts must be buried deep in the political psyche. If they had had tv then or the Internet, they would have had the same boring "news" programs that we do today. What a waste of everyone's time. I love the idea of the book, apart from my comments above. I think it would be a great read.

On the other hand, no matter what was happening in Pomeroy’s complicated life, he always returned to Sally, the black woman he truly loved. I found it almost humorous that he denied being racist because he didn’t hate black people. He hated that white people could lose their businesses and their comfortable way of life because the freed slaves would no longer work without pay. Pomeroy couldn’t accept that change was inevitable, and he fought it every step of the way.
Pomeroy did not hate black people but he wanted the system to still own slaves for free labour, and he fought for it. Very ironical. And black people were the slaves? Then he truly loved Sally. This must have made his life complicated indeed. All in all, I think the book is good, worth reading. Thanks for the insightful review.

I am quite intrigued to read this novel which is based around a character who wants to kill Abraham Lincoln because of his socialist stand. The story is set during the times of the American Civil War and I want to learn more about what happened then. Thank you for the review!
The disappearance of the word "I am" is indeed the highest happiness! :)
