Review by Mr Benji -- Man Mission by Eytan Uliel

If you have ever dreamed of traveling round the world, then the book, Man Mission, will be an invaluable tool for you. It is written by Eytan Uliel, who himself is a “global traveler.” Although the story seems about traveling adventures, but it is a fictional account of the lives of four boys (Daniel, Alec, Sam, and the anonymous narrator) growing into men.
Narrated in the first person, the story is written in a chronological order as the young lads engage in their “yearly practice” of voyaging—a traveling experience which they termed “Man Mission.” They journey round the world, visiting places like Africa, Spain, and Yasawa Island in Fiji. Properly documented are the places visited, injuries sustained and the means of transportation. While reading along, the reader can see his or herself journeying round the world with well-illustrated maps displaying the location of the places at each point.
Apart from the beautiful places, it was illuminating to see the consequence of a single act affecting other members of a family. What makes the story real is the way the author presents each scene by using concrete words—which are common in daily conversation—in the dialogues between the characters. Also, the story in a way depicts the culture of the American society.
Similarly, it was encouraging to see the support of friends and family members in times of depression. There are no parts that I did not like about the story except I wish a raunchy scene was omitted or the language softened. This minor suggestion is so as to reach the young minds.
The story is told with a passionate and sensitive tone and beautifully weaved around the theme of trust, relationship, and freedom. Above all, I like the Bible verses coupled with the common quotes of famous men – musicians, philosophers, and leaders.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is a replica of the challenges that some families face today: infidelity and divorces. I recommend it to married couples and mature minds which can see beyond the letters on the pages. On the other hand, I think the raw language used on some pages might put off sensitive readers.
Lastly, a particular feature that makes the book unique is the outstanding quality of editing because I detected only one grammatical error. Through the 378 pages of the book, the excellent writing made it a smooth “sailing” for me.
