I adore Hopper as a father figure to Eleven and Joyce as the mama bear for all the kids. I love the redemption story they give to Billy and how they delve more into his background, connecting through Eleven, making him a more sympathetic character.
I think they really capture the awkward and sometimes sad evolution friendships go through at that age but there's this one area and event in their lives that will bond them for life. Not to mention the budding friendship between Steve and Robin (she is a particularly amazing addition to the show for many reasons).
And of course, the main event... The Upside Down and Russians! What's not to love?! A wonderful mix of the 80s, foreign [human] invaders, other-wordly alienesque creatures, and a 4th of July carnival! The show not only takes place in the 80s, but it feels like it was made in the 80s. It feels like you're watching a show developed in the 80s but without poor CGI quality.
Hands down one of the best creations on television!
