Latest Review: The Orb by Tara Basi

Re: Stephen King

Post by Gift25 »

I started reading Steven King in middle school, and he quickly became one of my favorite authors. He was definitely my favorite for a very long time. I enjoyed everything he wrote, with the exception of the Dark Towers and It. The first book I read by him was The Talisman which was co authored. I was amazed at his ability to create suspense and build mindscapes in ways that to this day I still don’t quite grasp. I remember when I learned he was an English teacher prior to publishing his first novel, which explained his impeccable grammar and sentence structure. The story always flows so effortlessly, from start to finish. I haven’t read anything by him in a while, and this review has rekindled my interest.

I love Stephen King, but my favorite of his books is actually not one of his horror books. It's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. Maybe it's because I like to write myself, but it was very inspirational and helpful. I learned a lot of things from reading it and it's loaded with good quotes!

I have to say, I was really disappointed in King's last three books in The Dark Tower series. It felt to me, starting with Wolves of the Calla, that he had realized he may have bitten off more than he could chew with the series. Once he made himself a character in the series, it was almost like he was giving the reader excuses as to why the story took so long for him to tell and why it wasn't that great as it approached the conclusion.

Roland's showdown with the Crimson King was incredibly disappointing. I mean, come on... he almost left the end unfinished all together. I'm just happy the actual end of the series came full circle. I'm glad to admit that I loved the ending, but getting there was painful.

Yes definitely a King fan and I also loved the Dark Town series and I was just about to start reading The Stand. Just building up the courage, it’s a long book!

I have read many of his books over the years. I have seen several of his movies too, but my favorite of his books was Eye of the Dragon, if I am remembering the title correctly. The reason it is my favorite is because he wanted to write a book that his children could enjoy while they were still young.

The Dark Tower because it's different to his other work. The Green Mile, Dreamcatcher and Shawshank are some favourites. When it comes to his horror stuff, it's either a hit or miss

I've had such a varying experience with King, and I never know if I'm going to enjoy one of his books when I pick them up - I love some of his books with my entire heart, but in my opinion a few of his books have been subpar one-star reads. He's a polarizing author for me!

He really writes a lot, both in term of number of books and in book length, very possibly too much to keep a steady quality.
Ciao :)

I have several favourites by Stephen King. I always love to read The Stand and IT, but have recently re-read Christine and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Actually, I came here to ask about this author. Most of my friends are reading his books. I'm glad I found a topic under his name. Can someone please tell me what made him so popular? A book? Which book specifically initiated his popularity? Thanks.

I am far from a fan of Stephen King on a whole. He's weird to the point of drug-induced contrivance, his endings are terrible, and he takes way too long to get to the point. On the whole, I find him overrated.

On the other hand, he wrote my favorite novel.

To add further irony, when readers find me with a Stephen King book in my hand, they approach with enthusiasm, saying "Oh, which one is that?"

Then they read the title, "The Eyes of the Dragon," and their faces go from enthused to confused.

"Huh..." they then say. "Never heard of that one."

And it makes me feel like an uppity hipster. Score!
