Warren “Mitch” Mitchell and Alan Jeffrey accompany their longtime friend, Dave Jerome, to Martha’s Vineyard after Dave’s uncle, Walt Jerome, was found dead in his home. Named in Walt's last will as a beneficiary to the bulk of the estate, Dave was summoned to the island by Walt’s lawyer to discuss the particulars of his inheritance, and the specific instructions as to how to treat with Walt's death.
It is initially assumed that Walt died from a heart attack, but to everyone's surprise, the state-mandated autopsy reveals that foul play is at hand. What was meant to be a quick couples' getaway turns into a multiple murder scene almost overnight. Mitch - an investigative newspaper reporter - and Al - a photographer for the same newspaper - are no strangers to such things, but this was an adventure for which none of them had signed up.
On Martha's Vineyard - a place where time and processes move at a slower pace than on the mainland - there is no shortage of interesting characters and yet no initial clues as to whom the suspect is. With time against them, a chance tip-off leads the trio to a near-fatal conclusion no one saw coming.
Arsenic and Old Men: A Mitch and Al Mystery by Glenn Ickler is a cozy murder mystery with just enough humor and plot twists to keep the reader interested, and should appeal to adults in the 30-55 age bracket. It is written in the first person, from Mitch's perspective, as though he is having a conversation directly with the reader. This is a standalone piece, even though this book is one of several in the Mitch and Al Mystery series. Peppered throughout is some background information on Mitch, Al, and Dave so that the reader has a better sense of the lives and personalities of the three main characters. Current and relevant social topics are also lightly covered via the book's characters, such as alcoholism, mental illness, and irrational ICE regulations.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Although I observed a few typographical errors, the book seems professionally edited otherwise. There are a few instances of nudity and profanity, but they are not enough to take anything away from the book for me. I felt the usage was in keeping with the story arc of specific characters and didn't come across as obscene. I enjoyed the evident chemistry among The Three Musketeers (or The Three Stooges, depending on who's referring to them) and will be adding more Mitch and Al Mystery books to my reading list.
