The following is my review of Fearless Thinking, Stress-Free Living Guaranteed (Almost) by Purandar A. Amin.
This book is a wonderfully detailed self-help guide which is well-written and inspiring. However, it is not for everybody. The text refers frequently to the tenets of Hindu philosophy, particularly reincarnation. If one accepts reincarnation as a fact or even a possibility, the discussion of this concept will not be obtrusive. However, if the reader finds the idea of reincarnation to be blasphemous or ridiculous, he or she will likely gain no benefit from the book as it relies very heavily on the theory of reincarnation.
I, personally, enjoy reading books which involve a degree of metaphysical theory, so I did not find the writer’s frequent references to reincarnation to be in any way bothersome or obtrusive. I found the exercises beneficial, particularly the simple practice of taking one minute to write down everything that comes to mind, no matter how seemingly foolish it may be. A person can learn a great deal about the thoughts taking up space in the subconscious by engaging in this practice.
Although this is not a long book and is concisely written, it took me longer than expected to read it because I wanted to really absorb and give consideration to what I had read rather than speeding over the text and merely understanding the concept of the words in front of me. For those inclined to have an interest in metaphysical theory or for those who do believe in the tenets of reincarnation and karma, I unreservedly recommend reading this book.
The thing I liked most about the book was its approach to the subject. It is written in a straightforward and personal style. The author presents his ideas as a series of letters to his wife. The text is very gentle and encouraging as opposed to utilizing a “tough love” style. Some people, myself included, find the “tough love” style of self-help material abrasive and far from helpful. I much prefer the voice of a friend reminding me to examine my actions and try a new course to the voice of a drill sergeant bellowing at me that anything but elite conditioning, be it physical or mental, is failure.
I found no errors in the text and the formatting is impeccable. Clearly, the book was professionally edited.
I give Fearless Thinking, Stress-Free Living Guaranteed (Almost) four out of four stars. There is nothing that I disliked about the book, but as I stated in the course of my review, it is not the right book for those who find metaphysical theory offensive to either their personal or religious sensibilities.
