I currently live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where I plan to do a fiction series based on paranormal events in the city. I've been writing my entire life but it wasn't until 2003 that I finally became adventurous enough to publish a book. I entitled it "EARS: Evidence of Alien contact Revealed in Scripture" since that title that nicely summarizes the book's contents. Recently, I published a followup book entitled "Crux Decussata" and I'm working on a third that will be entitled "Ask the Animals."
Looking forward to exploring your forum.

I raised my 3 children to adulthood and they are now on their own so I now raise teacup poodles. My baby boy teacup is named Bean, he is three years old and weighs a little over two pounds.
I lost both my parents to cancer within two months of each other at the end of 2004, so my outlook on life has changed somewhat since then. I try to enjoy life more and am working harder to get my books published by an offline publisher because I now know that life can be short and if you want something you have to work hard to get it. I WANT my books with an offline publisher so I am working hard to get that done and get an agent.
I have donated copies of some of my books to libraries in a number of cities in Kansas and would love to get them in other libraries in other states.

Tell me... since you're doing a postgrad course in Diabetes, which of course is an endocrine disorder... have you heard of PCOS? What about insulin resistance?
I'm always very curious as to how much the medicos out there know about both. I've encountered hundreds that have never heard of either!

Then you haven't met very good doctors!!! Hahaha... But no, really, those two are very common sadly.
Insulin resistance is growing rapidly because of obesity, they are both linked (vicious circle; the insulin receptors "shut down" because of excess of glucose so they won't let that glucose be used by the body as fuel so the pancreas ends up working extra producing more insulin to meet the body needs. This damages the pancreas in the long run). Also insulin resistance is deeply linked to Ovarian Polycystic Disease (or PCOS, they are linked because of the hormones involved). But that doesn't mean you have to have PCOS to have Insulin resistance (since it is a Syndrome, you don't need to have all the symptoms or signs), or that if you are obese you have insulin resistance (although you might develop it later). Neither means you have to be obese if you have PCOS... ok, I'm going to stop now, hahaha.
Both are very interesting subjects and I like them a lot. Insulin resistance is very important subject in the course (because it increases the posibility of Diabetes, although you have to have a deficiency of Insulin [caused in the long run because the pancreas gets "tired" or damaged] to end up with Diabetes, insulin resistance alone won't give you Diabetes, unless you don't stop it), and so is PCOS. Prevention of Diabetes is one of the goals of the course. So ask way whatever you want to know about them!

I have both, and it took me 20 years to get a diagnosis. Even now, I go to doctors or other health practitioners and they look at me like I've made it up.
Luckily I have a good GP nowdays (she's the one who diagnosed me).
I love to "test" medical people and see how much they know about it!

Luckily when I got them I knew what I had because I was in med school already.
What I hate the most about them is the series of things that come with them. You know what I mean.
I still have to lose at least 20 more pounds to reach a healthy body mass index and break the PCOS completely. The obesity made my hormones crazy and they are still at work... I feel fine right now and I'm not obese anymore, but I still have to lose more weight

In my case, the obesity was the reason for both the resistance and the PCOS, but is not the same for everyone. I have had many patients with PCOS who have a healthy weight. The problem starts when something breaks the hormones balance.
And... I can't believe some doctors you have met didn't know about both diseases! These two are very common and insulin resistance is gaining a lot of importance because its direct relation to Diabetes, a disease that will become an epidemic in the future. Unhealthy food is king in this world! On the other hand... Med schools should be more strict about the people who gets to graduate, there are a lot of dumb doctors out there that don't know *$%&. And I'm not saying I know a lot, that's why I'm taking the courses, to know more, but there are some doctors that really, I can't believe they call themselves doctors.

Oh how I know what you mean! Only the cysterhood can know what it's like.Rebeca Darklight wrote:What I hate the most about them is the series of things that come with them. You know what I mean.
I think it's a bit of a chicken and the egg thing with the weight. I know that puberty arrived knocking on my door and with it did the weight. I didn't get it by overeating or inactivity - even my doctor has told me I have an exceptionally healthy diet and am more active than two thirds of the population. Some put on the weight and get the PCOS and IR, others get the PCOS and IR and put on the weight. I fall into the latter.
It's so nice to meet another cyster!

Singing karaoke is something I can't get enough of. I love playing old school board games like Clue and Life. I love driving around aimlessly. Yeah, that about all there is to know about me.
