War between nations can be disastrous and tragic. Many soldiers lose their lives in the battlefield, their wives at home left widowed and their children orphaned. The novel A Police Action by A.A. Freda is an historical fiction that covers that Vietnamese war. The United States of America troops too are engaged in the war. However, the news coming from the war is not good and America is on the verge of losing the war. They are thus forced to take drastic measures and send many soldiers to Vietnam. James is one of the soldiers who have been selected to proceed on the war torn Vietnam. America cannot bear the thought of losing the war. In the week after his selection to join the troops headed to Vietnam, James wins himself a beautiful girl, Samantha. Samantha and James had met at a pub where the latter and his friends had gone to have fun and look for female company. Unlike his friends who are busy drinking and dancing, James is sat on the chairs and disinterested in the things going on in the club. This is what attracts Samantha to him. It's ironical that she takes him for a gay since he initially failed to notice her moves to attract his attention and is sat while all her friends are busy partying. Samantha makes the move and James falls for her. It is love on the first sight. However, with James deployment to the Vietnamese war, he does not know when he will come back to Samantha. No one knows when the war will end. On the other hand, Samantha is pregnant for another man she barely knew. The pregnancy is a product of a one night stand during her best friend’s birthday party. Will their love for each other survive these obstacles?

I enjoyed the love story between Samantha and James. It is a love that is founded in sacrifice, trust and the desire to look out for each other. James is willing to do everything within his control for the safety of Samantha. He knows Samantha is a refugee with no one to take care of her after she had been forced to run away from home from her strict preacher father. He wholeheartedly helps Samantha with no expectations in return. For instance, he rents an apartment for her when he is leaving for Vietnam so as not to be involved in the mess at her friend’s house. Additionally, he opens a joint account in his name and Samantha’s name so that she may have money for emergencies while he is engaged in the war. These portrays pictures of lovers concerned about her well-being of one another. Their love is a source of hope for the faint hearted that true love does exist.

I was also moved by the style of suspense especially when Jamie is about to leave for Vietnam. He has just recently met Savannah and is moving to a war torn region. No one knows how long the war would take. Will their young relationship survive the long distance relationship? Will Samantha wait for him till the war is over? I was inquisitive on learning the fate of James and Samantha’s relationship, and even the outcome of the Vietnamese war. Such suspense increased my desire to read the novel.

The author uses a simple language in coming up with this novel and that is commendable. The language is unambiguous, easily comprehensible and that made it easier to understand this book's content. I encountered no difficulty in mesmerizing this novel as a result of its unambiguous language. My understanding was further enhanced by the fact that this book is exceptionally well edited. It has no typo or grammar errors.

There is nothing I disliked in this novel. I rate it at 4 out of 4 stars. The romance story between James and Samantha is interesting. I really enjoyed reading about it. Additionally, the other themes discussed in the novel are quite engaging. I recommend this book to all persons interested in romance genres. They will be enriched by the love story of James and Samantha. However, persons with no interest in romance genres may look for other novels.
