How bad are split infinitives?

Some grammar rules (and embarrassing mistakes!) transcend the uniqueness of different regions and style guides. This new International Grammar section by OnlineBookClub.org ultimately identifies those rules thus providing a simple, flexible rule-set, respecting the differences between regions and style guides. You can feel free to ask general questions about spelling and grammar. You can also provide example sentences for other members to proofread and inform you of any grammar mistakes.

How bad are split infinitives?

Post by SallyH55 »

Hi, all!

How much do readers and authors care about split infinitives? I know that fixing them can make a sentence more readable. But almost everyone seems to balk at saying "the man to whom I spoke " instead of "the man I spoke to". I find these all the time when reviewing books, and wondered where other reviewers draw the grammatical line. What about short everyday phrases such as "I turned off the light"? Seeking your advice!
