You are Beautiful Every Child is a Blessing by Natisha Pittman is a children’s book with a charming message. As a child, the author had issues with being bullied and had low self-esteem. She wrote this book to teach kids about the diversity of the human race. She believes God made everyone unique and special. Each page of the book introduces the reader to either a superhero (boy child) or an angel (girl child.) Each child has something unique about them that many may see as a negative. These things range from being really tall or really short to more serious things like having Down syndrome or being blind. Each child’s unique quality is presented positively.

My favorite part of this book was the pictures. Each picture showed the child being described. For the more obscure conditions, the pictures are very helpful. For example, most children wouldn’t know what vitiligo is. The picture shows a boy with two different skin tones. The picture is easier to understand than the written description. Another child in the book has a hijab, a word most children probably wouldn’t recognize. The picture shows a girl with a headscarf. The visuals are very helpful for kids.

What I liked least about the book was how awkwardly written it was. It rhymes, which is always nice for a children’s book, but the rhyming seems forced. It doesn’t flow well. I had to read really slowly to make sense of some stories. I also found a lot of errors in the writing. Some are grammar-related, but a lot of it is poorly written sentences that don’t make sense.

The book is intended for children. It would appeal to children who feel different. If they feel negative about themselves, this book could change that. This book would also be good for any child that needs to learn that it’s okay for people to be different. I think it would be most beneficial for parents to read this book along with their children. That way, they could have discussions and answers any questions that arise.

This book refers to God on every page, so it probably wouldn’t appeal to readers who don’t believe in God. People with a scientific background might not like the book either. For example, when talking about a boy with a cleft lip, the author says God gave doctors the idea to do the surgery to correct it. Some may take offense to that.

Unfortunately, I can only rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I wouldn’t give it a 1 because it really did have a sweet message. The idea of the book is amazing. But, I can’t give it a 3 or a 4 because it was so poorly written. The book would benefit from being properly edited and looked over by an experienced writer.

Despite the low rating, I would still recommend giving this book a try. Maybe parents could read it to themselves and then explain each child to their own children in more succinct words. The message in the book is really important!

It's too bad that the book isn't written well because the idea is great. Children with disabilities or even just differences shouldn't feel left out or ostracized. I hope the author can revise this.
