Review by cindyr2416 -- Looking Glass Friends by E L Neve
[Following is a volunteer review of "Looking Glass Friends" by E L Neve.]
For those that have been in any relationship, you know, there are always trialing times. No relationship is perfect. But in the overall picture, you realize if the relationship is worth remaining in or if you are just settling. After years people change. Are you still happy with who they are? Looking Glass Friends by E L Neve will have you turning the pages to find out what happens in the end.
Neil seems to feel as his life has no meaning. He even thinks of suicide as a way out. But, he encounters Ellie and her son as they come to buy pastries at the bakery he works in. He pays special attention to her mannerisms and facial expressions. His only goal is to make her happy. He goes out of his way giving her the best of the batch. She later repays him with a book and this is where the relationship starts.
They exchange emails and phone numbers later finding they have more in common then they thought. A friendship with the mental stimulation they both have desired for so long. Both Ellie and Neil are married but their relationships have fallen to a halt. Ellie's husband Jake makes lots of money and has no interest in her except that of a trophy wife to show off. Neil's wife and he, while living paycheck to paycheck, have become more like friends than a couple.
The emails and phone calls that are made in private in the middle of the night. But not without the knowledge of their spouses, which I found odd. These emails turned into love letters of desire. This leads me to question why their spouses allowed this to happen for so long? Does this not seem wrong in so many ways?
I found the book fascinating to see the reactions of Neil, Ellie, and their spouses. Are their others hiding secret relationships? Do they feel that this makes up for their misbehavior? How far would you be willing to allow you significant other's friendships to go before you step-in? It's hard not to say what happens without spoiling the book. This book will have you asking questions to your friends about what they would do in this situation.
What I liked most is that Ellie never steers from her responsibility as a mother. It shows how many people stay due to being dependent on their spouses. How we settle with being mistreated and disrespected because of the number of years and time put into a relationship. I am pleased also that Neil and Ellie didn't let the difference of wealth come between them.
What I didn't like was how this is allowed to happen and for so long. This is my opinion alone, but if you realize that you are unhappy, then why not end the relationship. Especially before you become committed to someone else. This only tends to complicate their relationship. Ellie came off clueless and ignorant as to her husband viewing her as a possession and believing their marriage was without flaws.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I found it to have some grammatical errors. It also seems as though Ellie was living in a fantasy world but I think that's what makes the story. Many twists had me surprised. I would recommend this to adults as I did find it entertaining. It was a page-turner that I couldn't put down.
