Raifstanger health condition and his new diet adoption story will definitely appeal and inspire many people. The title of the book and the cover photo grips the readers' attention. Why do we need to avoid the "Standard American Diet?" Some people take ages to adopt to change, but what triggered the author's urge to adopt the new diet after his diagnosis within a short period of time? I would like to know that. I will read the book.

Being a vegetarian and having seen a good deal of vegan recipes as well, I can attest to it personally that vegan does not mean healthy eating. There is a lot of vegan/vegetarian junk food as well. A ton. In comparing veganism to meat-based diets, I cannot really claim to have knowledge of it in such a capacity. Thus, the one thing I did not agree upon in your review is that vegans generally avoid processed foods and foods high in salt, fat and sugar. Looking at a sample of the book, the information given about cancer and carcinogens looks like it came from too few sources. Though I have no problem with someone describing to the world their experience with a diet change, I think that the truth and capacity of food as a cure to ailments is yet to be seen. Though I do like to read about people's journeys, I will give this book a pass!

I am a firm believer in eating everything but being moderate about it. So I am far from being Vegan still I wouldn't dismiss this book because of it. Maybe I could learn something from it. Great review.

From a sampling, this seems like an interesting memoir/recipe book for those who are interested in trying a vegan diet. It might be worth a second look, especially for someone who would like to try out vegan recipes. Well done.

The title caught my attention. I enjoyed his recalling childhood and background- it gave me memories of how I grew up - the bike riding, playing outside and meals together. However, I did have to eat certain foods. I have been pescatarian for nearly a decade and can appreciate the freedom of choice not force with regards to dietary needs.

I have no interest in dieting or healthy food, but I do realize it is very important matter that needs serious consideration. So I need to try and put some effort, thankfully with this book it will be much easier. Congratulations on well deserved BOTD!

This is a priceless, health message. Many diseases that affect humans are derived from the foods they eat and a diet adjustment can cause such a turn-around that a person will be left wondering, 'why didn't I know about this before!' This is, not only a book I would love to read, but an appropriate candidate for my library. Thanks for an amazing review. Congratulations BOTD.

I feel like incorporating "vegan nights" into my family's SAD diet would be fun. But I dont see us giving up meat any time soon. I feel like I would read this for the recipes alone. Nice review!

I definitely agree with the author that most health problems faced by Americans today have to do with their diet. Despite not being a vegan, I do follow the guidelines of avoiding most foods high in sugars, salts and fats. I am not a soda drinker nor do I consume red meat which studies have shown increase a person's risk for obesity. I do not think that I would fully convert to the vegan lifestyle, but that vegan stir fry and vegan cheesecake sound delicious.
