This sounds like an intriguing story of hope and miracles set in a period when African Americans were still struggling in the American South despite the end of slavery.
There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

I’m not sure what to expect as far as character-driven plots, but the main character sounds interesting with his unusual eye color.

This book sounds wonderful! I would read the book just to see how the parents reacted when they found out that the eyes of their infant were blue! The story is one offering hope to those who have lost hope. A great read!

The story is quite unique as I sampled the book. Kuimba's presence brought forth blessings to their town everytime he cried with a tone of a song. Such an amazing story of hope.

May I just start by saying how this is one of the most beautiful introductions I have read so far? In the first phase, I was impressed by the hypnotizing cover of the book. Absolutely exceptional! After reading your review, I thought I shouldn't miss this book. Thank you for the wonderful recommendation!
