Well, I love Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Puritan books, so if this book explores that era, then I’d probably enjoy this book too. Great review!

The book is probably a worthwhile read, but I doubt I will enjoy it. I prefer novels with relatable characters and a realistic plot. A perfect protagonist is not my idea of a realistic character.

Insightful review! Hmm. I'm guessing that the book contemplates human greed, rather than throwing in a bad guy. During a time of industrial progress, it is the businessman's own temptations that is the enemy.

A historical fiction set during the California Gold Rush seems to be interesting.

Thank you for the great review.

I don’t spend a lot of time reading historical fiction, but I have to say it’s a great way to learn about time periods in a way that isn’t boring, especially if the author has created some good characters. It sounds like that was done to perfection here. This really isn’t of interest to me as I read mostly non-fiction, but your review gave me some wonderful insight on this one.

Interesting even if slightly unusual. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean it in the wrong way, because I am all for trying new things in live. So this lack of expected protagonist vs antagonist conflict wouldn't hold me back from such promising book.

I enjoy historical fiction and this book sounds like a must read. The review mentioned that the book is gripping, funny, and well-written. I couldn't ask for more than accurate facts and a great story to boot. Thank you for an enlightening review.

I like the way the book seems to tackle the subject of capitalism. The title is eye-catching. I guess as we all endeavour to be successful in one way or the other we play chess with God. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for a great review! I enjoyed reading your analysis of it. I noticed you described parts of it as "funny." That's cool. I read the sample pages, but haven't gotten far enough in it yet to find humor. I love books that can incorporate humor into them.

Excellent review! I am a lover of historical fiction so I will have to check this book out. I like that the protagonist is "so perfect that sometimes the reader cannot relate to him." That probably adds to the humor of the book. It is refreshing sometimes to have a 'nice guy' as the main character! Thanks for the recommendation. :tiphat:

Thank you for the interesting review of this book. It sounds like an overal interesting story with it's up and downs, pluses and minuses. It's piqued my interest so I'm going to put this book on my to-be-read shelf and see if it pulls me in.

Wow a character's obsession with work motivated by noble purpose not by greed. I enjoy historical fiction so this book is worth a place in my TBR.
