I am more inclined to read this because of the historical information, I would obtain from the story. The california gold rush is a well known event, I have seen a couple of old western movies that depict that era. But it will be awesome to read about it and get a feel of how life was then. Thanks for a truly wonderful review.

The main character sounds like a good one. I'd like to read about him. I normally don't read historical fiction but this one sounds pretty good. Nice review.

I like your assessment of Playing Chess with God. I also prefer having a relevant antagonist to pit the main character against. From your review and the sample pages I read, I expect Henning gets any lingering naivety knocked out of him battling human nature and rigors of gold mining. It sounds like one of my favorite types of books and I thank you for the intriguing review.

This sounds like a very well written and well-researched book. I also don't like when there isn't a consistent antagonist to go against the protagonist but I'm glad overall that you enjoyed the book so much. Great review!

An interesting novel spurred on my real historical events. I would like to read the featured story on the Californian Gold Rush. It's quite sad people were desperate then and would kill others indiscriminately because of gold. Nice review.

I enjoy historical fiction. The California Gold Rush is a fascinating time period with its lawlessness and danger. Congratulations to the author for being chosen as BOTD. Thanks to the reviewer for introducing this book to me through your excellent review.

You wrote an insightful review! I love historical fiction so there is no doubt that this book will satisfy my interest. I've read some pages already and it's as intriguing as the title. Also, thanks for mentioning about the actual events.

I actually thought this novel is a religious-historical fiction because of the title. But the author had other intentions by this title; playing chess with God. The characters are well developed and it is beautifully written.

I like Henning Dietzel's mindset that a wealthy capitalist who exploits workers is a disgusting human being. I also like the fact that his obsession with work is motivated by a noble purpose not by greed. That's how things should be and since I like historical novels, I'm looking forward to reading this. Thank you for this wonderful review!

A nice historical fiction novel "Playing Chess with God" by Verne R. Albright is setup during the period of the California Gold Rush, and it depicts the real events that happened. The story focuses on Henning Dietzel who is a hero in this story, and has elegant character. The book quite appealing.
life is only knowing the unknown, we can do this by reading books easily- Online book club is a great place for this. This is what I believe.

Playing Chess with God by Verne R. Albright is a historical fiction. I personally don't like historical novels. So I will skip this one. Congratulations on #botd.

What an inquisitive driven title. Based on this book review, I like it for being written to depict real life scenarios. And may I put it forth like this, I kind of like the sound o playing chess with God to drinking tea with the devil. Because we all want to be somebody before leaving this mother earth, and after leaving can find a peaceful heavenly abode. :D Thanks for this review.
