The Altitude Journals: A Seven-Year Journey from the Lowest Point in My Life to the Highest Point on Earth is the inspirational and true story of David J Mauro. It is an amazing, heart-warming autobiography about a man who starts his journey of self-discovery at the lowest point in his life. His journey brings him across seven continents and to the top of seven mountains.

After his failed marriage, Mauro moved in with his sister. There, he got an invitation of his brother-in-law to climb the highest mountain of North America, the Denali. Since he didn’t have anything to lose, he took the invitation. With that, he took the journey that lasted for seven years and also took all the struggles and setbacks that came with it. But not only that. He got gifted with several good things too, like falling in love for the second time, getting closer to his sons and making peace with his father’s dementia.

One thing I loved about this book, is the honesty of it. The author tells his story honestly and openly. I liked his writing style too. Written in a clear voice, it is not only detailed but has a lot of beautiful descriptions as well. I also liked how with every mountain he climbed, he learned a new lesson and shared it with the reader. What started with a crazy decision, mountain climbing transformed the life of Mauro completely. His relationships changed with both his sons and with his dad; he realized how precious life is and climbing mountains – how weird it may sound – deepened his relationship with Lin, his second wife.

This book was not only inspiring, but it also shone a light on a pastime that is quite often overlooked or underestimated. Mountain climbing wasn’t something I was familiar with, but I enjoyed the topic nevertheless very much. I learnt a great number of things whilst reading this book, like some of the many dangers a mountain climber faces, the hard training and the great amount of money that goes into it. The author described it all very well, not boring me at all with too technical terms, but explaining it thoroughly to the reader. I also found it interesting to see Mauro grow as a mountain climber, starting as a complete ‘rookie’ but ending on top of the highest mountain on earth – the Mount Everest.

Overall, I enjoyed this book very much. It tells a beautiful and inspiring tale that for sure is worth reading! I couldn’t find anything I particularly disliked, nor could I find any grammar or spelling errors. I found that the book was professionally edited. For this, and for all the reasons stated above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to anyone who loves being inspired by a truly extraordinary story!
