The review by Juliet+1 of the book, I Never Met My Mother, by author Zhanna Sosensky gives me the impression that the author's journey of survival was one of incredible odds. Trilogy? Impressive! Living under and then escaping a suppressive regime? Terrifying! Sold! I want to read this book!

My native country got out of the Communist era around 30 years ago. Despite the fact that I was a kid at that time, I heard the stories that my parents shared about the hard times they've been through. Their generation still have shared opinion, oscillating between the long lines to get bread or the insufficient food, and the fact that everyone had a stable job, was easier to own a house, and the criminality was low, as the military was on the streets most of the time. Then the revolution came and many people died so starting with my generation could become free. I think I'll skip this book for now. But it does seem to cover some significant aspects of the Soviet Union. Great review! Thanks!

Anything to do with the Cold War, especially personal stories that have been preserved, holds my interest. Zhanna managed to pull herself up from a dysfunctional family to have a good life despite the sometimes appalling hardships she faced. It definitely sounds like a good read. Beautifully written review!
