E M P Honeymoon by Dorothy May Mercer introduces a new genre; the sci-fi, romance, military, mystery, action, adventure, thriller genre. It can’t be put in one category.

Police Sergeant Tom Turbulo and his wife, Kelly, are on their honeymoon on an island off the coast of Honduras. While Tom is out on a dive boat, Kelly goes shopping and stumbles onto a terrorist plot to take out the electrical grid in North America.

The idea of a small group of American civilians, led by a handsome CIA agent, breaking up a terrorist plot is a huge stretch of the imagination. Realistically, I don’t think the individuals involved could have pulled it off. It would require that multiple government agencies cooperate and share information and that top-secret classified information is shared with civilians who don't have a security clearance. When Kelly and Steve were trying to log into the bank of computers and copy data, it was just too easy. We need to give the terrorists some credit for having better security than that. But if you let yourself go with the flow of the story, it is very exciting and entertaining!

As civilians on holiday, Kelly and Tom were a little too eager to put themselves in dangerous life-threatening situations. One of my worst fears is to get seriously hurt in a third world country, wake in the hospital where people are standing over me speaking Spanish, and I don’t have a clue what is going on.

I liked the scientific artifacts that were woven into the story including solar flares, superflares, the Carrington Flare, man-made E.M.P.s, coronal mass ejections, planetary orbits, and Kepler’s third law, just to name a few things. It made the book very ‘smart’ and enjoyable to read, but it was still very easy to read.

I loved the introduction of the new United States Space Force in the story. I remember when President Trump first proposed the Space Force branch of the military and now it is a reality. We have truly ushered our military into the 21st century!

Dear Leader (DL) is my favorite character. He is the kind of bad guy we love to hate. I hope he learned to keep himself more educated about the technologies his people are developing.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. EMP Honeymoon is well-written, well-edited, and is very original. It is non-stop action. I read it from beginning to end in one sitting. I couldn’t stop reading it. When I finished it, I was sad that it was over. It takes a gifted writer to make a reader feel that way.
