People who read are hiders. They hide who they are. People who hide don't always like who they are.

One of the quotations at the beginning of the final chapter: "Happiness consists in realizing it is all a strange dream." Rachael seemed happy in her dream. I didn't get the feeling she wanted very much out of life. But you are right, they were all rather shadowy.mary-annef wrote: ↑25 Jan 2020, 11:57 I think Rachel was the only woman we really got a good feel for, and that was filtered through her husband. When he spoke of sharing the work with the twins, changing diapers, etc., I did wonder if she would have backed him up or rolled her eyes in the background if she heard him. It didn't sound like she was prepared to compromise her lifestyle to allow her husband to take a less stressful job, or to help out financially herself by getting a job. But then we don't know if she was even aware of the stress he was under so it's unfair to judge her for that. I think, in the end, it was a book about men and the women were just shadow characters.
