Official Review: Pablo and The Monkey by Kim Newey
Pablo and the Monkey by Kim Newey is a story of a young boy who becomes infatuated by a little monkey he meets in the market. The monkey is taken care of by a man named Pedro who houses many animals in the market, but this little monkey has always caught Pablo’s eye.
Kim Newey has placed a heavy Christian theme in this book. Being set in South America, it is understandable that the characters would be religious. The themes that Newey presents are exceptional life lessons for young readers. These themes include love, friendship, compassion, and most importantly forgiveness of Christ. Many people might be put off by a religious theme. However, the themes of forgiveness, compassion, friendship, and love are universal and can be applied to any belief system. Therefore, even though this book carries Christian themes, it does not have to be read by only believers of the Christian faith.
The plot of this story is engaging, fun, and completely relatable. Pablo is a fun-loving and excited child. He wants to spend as much time with this monkey as possible and this lands him into a bit of trouble. Pablo is growing and learning. This story illustrates that mistakes can be fixed with simple solutions. The pictures in this book are nothing short of spectacular. The cartoon animations are exceptionally illustrated and help deliver the message of the story flawlessly. The images in a children’s story are arguably more important than the words and Newey does a great job placing emphasis within the pictures.
I am rating Pablo and the Monkey 3 out of 4 stars. I sadly cannot give this book a perfect rating because of the multiple punctuation and capitalization errors I came across while reading. These are quick and easy fixes for the author. When these mistakes are rectified, I will be more than willing to provide a perfect rating.
I recommend this book to any family who wants a book to teach their child about universal qualities such as forgiveness, friendship, love, and compassion. However, I think this book would be best suited for a family or young reader who is of Christian faith.
