Official Review: Faction of Time by Tilly Tiason
Faction of Time by Tilly Tiason is a fantasy novel following a boy in high school named Grumbled. Grumbled is an extraordinary teen and a son of Khronos, in an extraordinary world—but that isn’t what the most interesting thing about him is. From the very beginning of the story, Grumbled is dead and retelling the story of how he died while drinking in a bar in hell. Grumbled details the twists and turns that brought him to his death, including the prophecy insisting he kill or be killed by another young man, his relationship with his best friend Roué, and several other characters he meets along the way. He describes for the reader a vivid picture of his struggles, triumphs, and bitter losses.
Something that I appreciated a lot about this book is that the author explains the terms used in the novel even though this book is a sequel. It helps ground the reader without going into tedious detail. Even though I appreciated that little extra help at the beginning of the novel, my favorite aspect is the relationship between Grumbled and another character Valkyrie. They help each other with their personal struggles, and I liked the fun and interesting dynamic between them.
Despite my enjoyment of Grumbled and Valkyrie’s relationship, there are a number of aspects that I dislike about the book. I found that the relationship between Grumbled and Roué fell a little flat because of Roué’s selfishness and other bad qualities. Despite the fact that Grumbled is in love with Roué, I could not find anything particularly lovable about her. She seems like a very self-absorbed and shallow person, and her following Gara, Grumbled’s opposite in the prophecy, struck me as a grab for a romantic relationship instead of selflessness. That may have been the case because Roué’s motives were sort of hazy and never clearly shown. Another problem I found with the novel is the massive number of spelling and grammar errors. The biggest problem is homophone switches, closely followed by verb tense errors and punctuation errors such as comma splices. This book should go through another round of editing.
Given the number of errors and the flat relationship contrasting with the aspects that I like, I can only give Faction of Time 2 out of 4 stars. I would not feel confident recommending this book to a wide audience, but to a specific audience it could be very enjoyable.
I would recommend Faction of Time for people who love the fantasy genre and coming-of-age stories. Anyone who likes interesting supernatural powers might want to try this novel as well. I would not recommend this book to people sensitive to violence.
