After Tessie was caught having an affair with Garrison by her husband, Frank, she gets divorced. She squeezes every penny from Frank that she can, while not giving any thought to the custody of their children. Using her womanly wiles and voluptuous body, Tessie then entices Garrison, who just had his second divorce, to marry her.

Garrison is fairly happy with his trophy wife until, after many years, he gradually realizes they have nothing in common, and he doesn’t really like her. She is nasty, selfish, and cares only about keeping herself beautiful, whereas he embraces everything about computers and having thought-provoking and philosophical conversations. Garrison begins forgetting things and becomes convinced that he suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. He wants to leave his belongings to his two daughters, who have been estranged from him since his marriage to Tessie. He knows divorce is not an option after witnessing how vicious Tessie was to her first husband; if nothing else, his money would be tied up in the courts for years. Therefore, Garrison has to murder her, but he has to hurry while he still has the mental ability to pull it off.

The Little Book of Bad Intentions by Allison Basile is a delightful book filled with dark humor, which is told from the third-person point of view. Before deciding on this story, I desired something to make me smile and, if I was fortunate, to chuckle outright. Luckily for me, I got both in this tale, making me glad I selected it. The humor was my favorite aspect of the story. At only 117 pages, the novella has a preface and then is broken up into 16 chapters, each with an interesting title like “When a Man Hates a Woman” (Chapter 1) and “The Ice Age Cometh” (Chapter 5). A quote was written at the beginning of a couple of chapters that made me smile. This is one of the quotes: “Tact is the ability to tell someone to go to Hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.—Winston Churchill (1874-1965).” The interesting plot, with the unexpected twist at the end, and the witty and descriptive prose kept me thoroughly engrossed in the book.

Although sex is alluded to, there are no explicit pornographic scenes. There were some profanities in the tale, so readers averse to that should probably avoid the book. Due to the nature of the story and the cursing, children should steer clear as well.

Since I only discovered a few minor errors in the book and because this amusing little tale kept me thoroughly entertained and lightened my day, it achieves a rating of four out of four stars. I disliked nothing about it. This novella is enthusiastically recommended to readers who enjoy light reading with some dark humor mixed in. Comprised of only 117 pages, it didn’t take long to read, and it definitely put a smile on my face.

Tessie seems to be greedy and selfish. I pity Garrison for falling for an egoistic woman, who later forces him to think of committing a crime. I'd love to know how things turned out. I love the fact that there is humor in the narrative. I will check the book. Incredible review. Kudos.

I can't imagine marrying someone and only years later realizing you don't like their character. At that point, I would think you'd only have yourself to blame for the mess you've made.
