Review by Reagan Reg -- Man Mission by Eytan Uliel
Life can be a difficult journey for all of us. It can bring forth a fair share of ups and downs, dark and low moments. Sometimes, it can bite you to the extent that you think you are never getting out of a situation alive. The novel Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a book that discusses the journey of four men; Daniel, Alex, Sam and the protagonist, men who are have been bitten by life and are on a mission to rediscover their life purposes. These characters are all living successful lives with well salaried jobs, are having families but all is not well. Something is still amiss in their lives. They are consumed by the endless cycle of duty to their families and social commitments that they barely have time for themselves. It is these endless and repeated cycle of life that prompts them to do something adventurous and novel with their lives. To this end, they agree to go on a man mission that involves visiting countries around the globe once every year just to find happiness and life purpose in the jungle. The mission involves biking, kayaking and hiking in the remote jungles, oceans, mountains and some of the dangerous place you could imagine about in the world. However, man mission is for men only. Their wives stayed back while they went about such deadly mission. Will these men find happiness and fulfillment in this new found path?
I loved the reason behind the aforementioned characters setting on the man mission. Man mission is given birth to as the result of the four men barely having time for themselves and are consumed by the social and family obligation. They have money, are leading successful lives but life is still boring. They want to do something adventurous, something manly and that can give them fulfillment. This is the reason they set out on man mission. That was lovely. The characters portray the workaholics today in our society that spend much time on work at the expense of the happiness and fulfillment. By highlighting the life of the leading characters, the author creates a connection between them and the workaholics and encourages them to step out of their daily routines to enjoy themselves. Life must not always be taken too seriously and can be enjoyed by engaging in hobbies and other simple things in life like going out to enjoy the beauty of nature.
Another aspect I enjoyed in this novel is the supportive nature of the male characters. The four men are on the lookout for one another whenever one of them is in trouble. For instance, the protagonist takes in Alex into their home when he is in a financial crisis and is living from hand to mouth. Similarly, the rest of the group are constantly encouraging and advising the protagonist when he is having troubles at home with his wife Rachel. The protagonist admits that he felt better after sharing his predicaments with them. The relationship between the men shows the importance of friends and the role they play in our lives. Some friends become family and friendship is something that should never be taken for granted.
Additionally, I loved characters like Alex. Alex is just humorous and his ideas about life always made me to laugh while reading the book. For instance, when Daniel and Pamela are moving separate ways from their marriage for a year, he encourages Daniel not to be worried about divorce since six out of ten marriages ended in divorce. Similarly, he encourages the protagonist to look for other women when he is not in good terms with his wife Rachel. I found his ideas weird and absurd but could not help but laugh at them. He always has a way of bringing a different side of things to the man mission. Alex shows that people in society have different reasons for certain things and that we cannot all be the same.
There is nothing I disliked in the novel. It has an amazing content on the adventures undertaken by the men in various countries, the role such adventures played in their lives and encourages readers to enjoy life by doing simple things such as enjoying the beauty of nature. That is excellent. It is for these reasons that I rate this novel at 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it t all persons interested in adventure and thriller fictions. The man mission activities are just thrilling, adventurous and full of fun. However, persons with no interests in adventure or thriller fictions may try other novels. I enjoyed reading this novel. It is exceptionally well edited.
