Ran Out of Eggs for your Cake?

Post by LauraLeeWasHere »

I grew up super poor and my mother had to cook and bake good things from just whatever was in the house and it threw me into a flashback thinking about it.

If you discover you wish to bake a cake but suddenly realize you don't have any eggs in the house, you can substitute with salad dressing or mayonnaise. But try to stir in as much of the powder as possible and then fold a few large TABLESPOONS of the salad dressing into the mostly moist batter. Don't beat it in because the eggs are pretty well beaten already within the salad dressing.

It works great with chocolate cake and gives it a bit of a tang, because of the vinegar in the salad dressing.

Save me a piece!

And they sang a new song saying,
"You are worthy to take the book,
and to open its to seals,
for You were slain and have redeemed us to God,
by your blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and Nation." Rev. 5:9

I have heard of using mayonnaise in cake before, but never would have thought of salad dressing. Very creative, thanks for sharing!

Wow that's really interesting! I can definitely see that working for a substitute for eggs since it would provide moisture. Have you tried similar substitutions in recipes where the egg is acting as a binder? My boyfriend has a mild egg allergy so I usually use applesauce, flax seed meal, or almond butter as substitutes. It usually works but sometimes the recipe comes out flatter because it doesn't have the egg to help it bind and rise.

Wow, I never knew that this could be done. I've always had this happen severally and I just go ahead with baking it that way. The cake always comes out so hard like a stone. With this, I surely will never have to feel sad if I run out of eggs henceforth😀

I've actually never heard of these substitutions before. Thanks for sharing! If I ever do find myself short on eggs, I might give mayonnaise a try...

This is extremely interesting. Although I have tried banana as an alternative to eggs and used mayonnaise but not as an alternative, the concept of salad dressing is both foreign and interesting.
