The book Man Mission is an adventure-packed fictional tale written by Eytan Uliel. It is an honest and forthcoming story of self-discovery through the ups and downs of life as told by a man. The basic structure of this book chronicles the character’s life over the course of fifteen years: from early adulthood into middle age. During this time he recounts the events in his life: marriage, new jobs, having children, etc. interspersed with an annual trip that is taken with his three closest friends, known as ‘man missions’. Although these are designed for the sake of doing manly things and completing crazy adventures, it quickly becomes a time of reflection and self-growth. The author beautifully interweaves the lessons learned from the ‘man missions’ into the day-to-day life of the main character.

Overall, the book is very well written. The author tells a raw and humble story of the hardships of marriage, while also challenging society’s view of manhood as a whole. The way that the ‘man missions’ mirror the struggles of normal life is poetically written. I think both men and women can relate to this book and I would recommend to most adults.

It is evident that this book was professionally edited; with only one minor grammatical error found that did not disrupt the flow of the story. There was, however, profanity and some crude humor throughout. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is easily offended by this type of language and writing.

If I had to be overcritical of the book, there are a few instances where the author over explains the symbolism of a ‘man mission’; as if the reader wouldn’t catch on. For example, he includes phrases like, “I finally had time to stop and smell the roses”. I feel as though the symbolism of the event would have held more weight without the explanation and ended up feeling rather repetitive.

Even with that being said, I would still recommend a four out of four rating. The book is a great read, very thought provoking and is easy to relate to. I think the book caters to a large audience of people and teaches life lessons that most people could benefit from. It has a good mixture of humor interlaced with sincerity that is appealing. The author also does a great job of making you feel as though you are on the adventure with him, with his beautiful descriptions of each country that is visited. I highly recommend this book!
