Review by JKO -- Nadeems journey by Sherine Anniruth
Nadeem's Journey by Sherine Anniruth is a true-life story of a loving mother losing her son to cancer. The author writes from her own personal experiences and that of her son, Nadeem. She begins by telling a story that reflects her pure love for her child from the first time she learned that she was pregnant. She goes on to talk about the relationship Nadeem had with her and his other siblings, as well as how he progressed in everything he did growing up. She then gives her own account of Nadeem's experiences after he was diagnosed with cancer. The author writes in the hope that readers find inspiration to fight for what they believe in regardless of what other people say.
It is extremely difficult for any mother to watch her child die slowly from a terminal disease such as cancer. I commend the author for her strength to share this heartbreaking story in a well-structured manner. I like the way she starts off her story with a comprehensive description of who Nadeem was, as well as how much of an inspiration he was to his siblings. This was important because I think it makes the story more empathic for the reader. I personally felt the pain of the author while I read, as I felt that I knew who Nadeem was. This was because of the way the author started her story.
Trust your instincts, act fast and get your body tested when you think something is wrong with your body. This was the underlying lesson this book sought to teach. I think it is important that every book has an important message to teach readers. I was happy to see that this book did not disappoint in that regard. I also found this book to be very informative, as there was a glossary after the last chapter. This explained the numerous medical terms that were used throughout the book.
I liked that the author used clear and coherent English, with no grammatical errors or profane words. I was glued to the book the whole time and finished reading it in one sitting. I also liked that the author acknowledged the roles other people played in making sure that Nadeem was comfortable throughout his sickness. I was especially drawn to the author’s sister, Aneesa, for her sacrifices in that regard.
Despite the positives, I found some of the pictures that were displayed too large and unnecessary at times. It sometimes felt like the author was more concerned with using the pictures to cause an increase in the number of pages rather than give a clearer picture of the message she was trying to pass across.
I rate Nadeem's Journey 4 out of 4 stars. I have not taken off any star because my reservations were completely overshadowed by the quality of the content and how much I enjoyed reading the book. I recommend this book for all adults especially people interested in true-life stories.
