The Interloper, by Dave Zeltserman, is an unforgettable fast-paced, high-action novel, that remains terse and gripping throughout the length of the story. Without any lingering, superfluous wording, the author takes you blow-by-blow into the intense American crime underworld.

The narrative follows Dan Willis, an out-of-work, ex-military liquor salesman, who is recruited by a government organisation called ‘The Factory.’ Ostensibly sworn to protect the nation from insurgents, The Factory trains men and women just like Willis, in the art of killing, all in the bid to stop an imminent war, one insurgent at a time. Due to desperation, and perhaps some patriotic loyalty to his nation, Willis feels no need to question this narrative, believing he’s on the ‘good side’ of this war as he mindlessly assassinates twenty-five targets for The Factory, in a doubtless, robotic fashion. But the twenty-sixth target, a receptionist at a dental office with a ten year old son, who Willis simply can’t believe is an insurgent, causes him to reassess. And a short investigation later, Willis discovers it’s all lies. Forced to make a decision there and then, Willis not only boycotts the death factory, but vows to bring down his former employers, regardless of all the other trained killers within.

This book was a fantastic read all the way, complete with all the grit and grim you’d expect from a crime novel. Here, we see a man desperate to reclaim his humanity from the institution he sold it off to, and the atrocious path he has to follow on his mission to redemption. From a salesman, to an assassin, to an armed robber, Willis' criminal nature would make him appear as the ‘bad guy’ in any other story, but in this one, he’s a man nursing the betrayal of his nation with a passion, and you can’t help but root for him and his grumpy bull terrier companion.

All to the credit of the author of course. Even as the story jumps to different characters' points of views, Mr. Zeltserman never loses you in the narrative. And combined with the ebb and flow rhythm he creates with anxious anticipation and then intense action, the story manages to keep you hooked throughout.

Therefore I feel comfortable giving this book a 4 out of 4 rating, and I recommend this to action fans, and any reader who doesn’t mind some violence, profanity, and mild eroticism. It’s well written, professionally edited, and could very well be your next favourite action thriller novel.
