As I remember, he wrote a lot of scientific researches about cancer before he began to write sci-fi. This is really cool.
As for the vivid language, this is really important for sci-fi and fantasy. Readers must imagine other worlds and non-human beings when they read such books. A good and vivid language helps a lot.
