Review by snowbear -- Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Sn...
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a children's book story featuring a cat detective named Inca and her adventures with her friends as they try to unravel a mystery about a missing national treasure in Sri Lanka. Inca and her friends embark on a journey together with a baby elephant and a sea turtle they met on the island. As they continue on their quest, they also learn about the island's great culture and history.
First of all, I'm going to start by saying that Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat is such a delightful read. I'm sure that young kids, especially children between the ages of 7 to 12 will enjoy reading Inca's story immensely. The writing is simple, perfect for its intended audience. Inca's voice can also be heard throughout the story. It feels as if the readers are part of Inca's adventure as she shares what happens to them on the island through her diary. One may even feel that Inca is your friend.
Apart from that, the illustrations are also adorable and help in catching the attention of the readers. The drawings are full of color and life. Since the intended audience of the book are children, the pictures are perfect in stimulating their imagination as the story develops.
Perhaps the most notable thing that I like in the story is how the author incorporates bits of information about Sri Lanka and its culture. It even features places in the said country that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Through her book, the author helps in promoting the beauty of the place. I also like how the story has a variety of different animals such as sea turtle, elephants, monkeys, and leopards. Even the cats have different breeds. Even in this simple story, diversity is shown, and it's also one of the things I appreciate in the book.
Overall, I would rate this book as a solid 4 out of 4 stars. I think the writing of the author is exceptional, how she manages to create such an engaging read out of a simple story for children. I also find it unique how the author decided to incorporate Sri Lanka and went on to describe it in the story, as I only encounter instances like this rarely in children's books. There is absolutely no profanity in the book, and it also has very little errors. I would recommend this book to children between 7 to 12 years old, and also to parents who would like to read their children some books. Because the intended audience of the book is very specific, I wouldn't recommend this to adults unless you enjoy reading books for children.
