Review by Emerald+ -- The Date Farm by Jack Winnick
The Date Farm by Jack Winnick is a crime thriller novel that starts with a terrorist attack that takes place at a shopping mall in Los Angeles, California. Many innocent lives are lost and various United States law enforcement departments are baffled by this event and the reason for its cause. Uri Levin, an Israeli Mossad police agent, and his wife Lara, an American FBI agent, are made to work together to find out who is behind these terrorist attacks and why. As the story progresses even more bewildering attacks occur and as the two begin investigating, they uncover that something more sinister than what they had initially thought is going on.
The mystery and suspense of the novel literally had me at the edge of my seat as I wondered what would happen next. I feel Winnick did an excellent job with his diction and way of storytelling. As the story went on, the plot thickened and a very perplexing complex mystery was constructed. It was all so intriguing and, in the end, came to a very satisfying resolution.
I also liked that the writing style was very descriptive. In every chapter, vivid descriptions of the atmosphere, setting and actions were given. Which made me as a reader feel as if I was in the novel experiencing what was going on.
Furthermore, the characters in this book were also well developed. Regardless of what their goals in the story were, I think that overall there was a good introduction to their respective backgrounds and personalities. As the story progressed the characters gained more depth and changed in reaction to the events that would take place. I felt Winnick handled that aspect really well.
The one thing I didn’t like about this novel was how the story at times tended to focus a lot on the ethnicity of characters especially since the terrorists were Middle Eastern. I understand that the ethnicities of the characters couldn’t totally go without being mentioned as they were important to the plot of the story. However, I felt there were some unnecessary comments that were made from time to time which really didn’t add much to the story.
Overall, the novel was very interesting and well written. It was also exceptionally edited, I didn’t find any grammar or spelling errors. As a result of that, I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. Despite the issue I mentioned previously I still give it full stars because the good things about the novel outweigh the bad. I think the story is directed towards an adult audience as the novel deals with the heavy issue of terrorist attacks and extreme cases of violence.
