Re: Apple vs fig

Post by Gabrielle Sigaki »

I have always been told that the forbidden fruit was an apple, but maybe the author thought about that reference when writing because it does make sense for me. Another possibility is that people from different countries and cultures have been told differently. But it seems the majority heard that the fruit was an apple.

We all have always heard that it was an apple. And as I had never read bible I didn't gave it much of a thought. But now I think a fig seems more appropriate because I feel it suits that ancient humankind situation whereas apple doesn't go much with it even if one has always heard it as the forbidden fruit throughout his/her life.

I believe most people think it could have been an apple since they are pleasing and appetizing to look at. Either way, we can only guess which fruit they ate since this is one area where the Scriptures are silent.
That is so true, the fig is not pretty! It is a delicious fruit, but if it was side by side with an apple I would choose the apple due to the appearance of the fig!
This was the first time that I had heard the fig suggested as the forbidden fruit!
Yeah, me too! We will never know for sure what Adam and Eve ate, but I found it a fun fact to ponder since the author put it in this book!

Arwa_here wrote: 08 Jun 2020, 03:01 fig being not visually pleasing is a good theory. However, apple is the the most common fruit people refer to when talking about eve. I've also heard that it was a grain of wheat Eve ate, not a fruit. I guess we won't know the complete truth about it.
A grain of wheat? That's interesting. No, we will never know for sure, but it's always fun to speculate and to hear other's opinions!

We began learning about Adam and Eve in Sunday School classes, and I remember the teacher always showing a picture of Eve holding an apple so I had never thought of it as anything else. Now I am curious since the author used a different fruit!

I guess that's a question for when we are face to face with God. The Bible doesn't tell us anywhere what the fruit was, other than to say it was the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Somehow, tradition has made it an apple.

It's really something to think about, maybe we will never know for sure. But it's a very interesting question.

We will never know, it might even be a fruit that doesn't exist anymore. The reason the bible does not state what fruit it was is because it does not matter. What matters is that they disobeyed God's orders and that's the important thing.

I've heard both references over the years, but the apple seems to be hugely favored over the fig. I agree with the other reviewers that the fig certainly isn't a fruit that is "pleasing to the eye!" It could have been just about any fruit that is 'pretty,' but does it really matter? The sin would have been the same, regardless.

I think everyone did, that's why it stood out to me when the author chose to portray it as a fig! :D

Yes, I think most people like apples so maybe that's why the apple became known as "the fruit!"
