I agree with you. We'll never know for sure. As kids, we were told that the Adam's apple was as a result of the remnants of the forbid fruit. Maybe that's the origin of the assumption.

I have never heard about Eve sleeping with Lucifer and giving birth to Cain. This is the first time I'm hearing about it. I'll ask around.

Honestly, if this fruit was only available at the garden of Eden, then there is no way it ever left there, or even its seeds. I don't think it's available outside of Eden.

You're absolutely right, we will never know for sure! I just found it interesting that after thinking it was an apple all of my life, why the author chose a fig. Just a fun discussion to see what others have believed down through the year.
Where I come from, we just call apples "fruits" and since the Bible didn't specify the type of fruit they took, we assumed it's our "fruit" which is an apple.

That may be why apples are so delicious! I bet the majority of people who answer this question will say they grew up believing it was an apple. Oh my, to be told Eve slept with Satan must have been a shock!
The way the book describes it, this fruit must be juicy. I haven't seen a juicy apple. I don't know about figs, but are they juicy?

Am I the only one who was told this? I was maybe 10 or 12, and it was a discussion between and my mom and her friend that they had in the car where I was also present. My mom attends what I describe as ultra-conservative (not quite Amish/Mennonite/Plain) but pretty close to it. I was like what. I think I might’ve read the passage once in an old KJV bible but I’ve NEVER heard it again.
I've never heard of this. Looks like you're alone. But I heard of something closely related to that. As a child, we were told that this wasn't exactly a fruit. They argued that if you divided a human body symmetrically, you'll locate "the fruit in the middle of the garden." I assume this is somehow connected to your views.

An apple isn't so juicy and delicious. Honestly, I don't think this was actually an apple. Why isn't anyone thinking if a ripen mango? Mangoes are juicier than apples.

kdstrack wrote: 07 Jun 2020, 22:51 I doubt that it would be a fig because the Bible does tell us that the fruit was "pleasing to the eye." A fig is sweet, but it is not pretty!! I believe most people think it could have been an apple since they are pleasing and appetizing to look at. Either way, we can only guess which fruit they ate since this is one area where the Scriptures are silent.
According to this book, the serpent took one fruit, squeezed it until it's juices were flowing. I haven't seen an apple with such amount of juices.

Now, this isn't backed behind any kind of viable reference, but wasn't this a case of unclear translations? The way that it was originally written made it ambiguous enough that it could have been several different things - both fig and apple included?

At the end of the day, all we can ever do is speculate. Like you rightly said, it was mentioned as a "fruit" in the Bible. We just have to be content with this level of knowledge and it will forever be one of life's many mysteries. The book, "Killing Abel" is still intriguing though!

I had never heard anyone say it was a fig or any other fruit. God told them (Adam and Eve) not to eat of the "fruit." To my knowledge, the apple is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, however, the fig tree is. In Mark 11:12-25 Jesus curses the fig tree as a sign the Jewish people don't accept him as the Messiah.

Could the fruit Adam and Eve had eaten in the garden have been a fig as the author portrays? Or was it actually an apple? Or, will we ever know for sure?
I've read somewhere that fig is the right fruit, and apple only got a bad rap because some painter put an apple tree in his depiction of the garden of Eden. But most probably we'll never know for sure.

That makes sense! I would automatically think of apple if someone said fruit under those circumstances!

That is interesting. I have never heard of it being a fig until this book. As a child, I just took the adults at their word and never researched to see if they were right or wrong! Now I'm curious. I'm sure we will never know for sure, but it's something to ponder!
