Review by jhunt -- Final Notice by Van Fleisher
What would your reaction be to the realization that you only have 10, 20, or 30 days to live? Would you make the most of the time you have left and spend it with your loved ones? Would you use the time to get your affairs in order? Would your final actions be ones filled with kindness, including donating your possessions? Would you find ways to gain revenge with impunity on those who have wronged you?
Final Notice, written by Van Fleisher, explores all these hypothetical avenues as different characters in the novel grapple with receiving the somber news that their days left on Earth are numbered. While the novel incorporates intricate plot lines with various interesting individuals, the main protagonists are Vince and Trudy Fuller, a couple in their seventies living in Pasadena, California. Vince and Trudy seem to be living the perfect retiree life, as their days are filled with spending time with their dog, hosting dinner parties with their friends, and dedicating time to their respective hobbies. However, when Vince experiences an altercation with a younger and more aggressive stranger, he begins to feel anxious about not being able to defend himself and his wife as they grow older.
Simultaneously to Vince and Trudy's story, we also watch as Vijay Patel, head of VitalTech Industries, oversees the trials of his newest invention, the VT2 watch. This watch functions as an evolved Apple Watch and includes a feature known as "Final Notice". When a user receives their Final Notice, it means that they will die within the next 10, 20, or 30 days, allowing them to get their affairs in order prior to their death. Some subjects in the test groups react in ways that Vijay had never imagined and definitely not intended.
Final Notice was an extremely interesting read and I appreciated how the author covered sensitive topics in our society (suicide, racism, treatment of the elderly, gun control, immigration) in a relevant way. The way these topics are intertwined into the plot give you valuable insights into the different layers of our society and how these layers affect the people that make up our society. The entire novel was expertly crafted and completely engrossing. My favorite parts of this suspenseful thriller were the multidimensional characters and the thought-evoking dilemmas these characters faced.
My favorite individual in this literary work was Vijay Patel, the technology genius that executed the creation of the VT2 watch. Throughout the novel, we see his intentions with his design and get a true insight into his motivations and thoughts. Seeing how his main intention with his invention was truly to help others was very endearing to his character. When it comes to my least favorite aspect of this novel, I truly cannot come up with any flaw that made me dislike this literary work!
Final Notice had very minimal grammatical errors, a completely engrossing plot, and an amazing array of strong characters. For these reasons, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to explore the topics of race, gun control, immigration, and politics, in a suspenseful thriller. It is important to note that the author takes on a more liberal approach with detailing these topics. If you are uncomfortable with that stance, this book may not be the right book for you.
