I had never heard anyone say it was a fig or any other fruit. God told them (Adam and Eve) not to eat of the "fruit." To my knowledge, the apple is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible, however, the fig tree is. In Mark 11:12-25 Jesus curses the fig tree as a sign the Jewish people don't accept him as the Messiah.

Could the fruit Adam and Eve had eaten in the garden have been a fig as the author portrays? Or was it actually an apple? Or, will we ever know for sure?
Lol, it is not an apple nor is it a fig. Well, we'll probably never know. Maybe the fruit does not exist and is unique to that particular tree. Only television and paintings depict the fruit as an apple. The author was expressing literary creativity by hinting that the fruit was a fig. However, there is no bais to this.
Exactly! And it possibly could have been a fruit that is unique to that one particular tree! Good point! I actually like that idea! It was the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" so it should have it's own unique fruit. :eusa-think: :)

Thanks! And you are absolutely right, it doesn't really matter! But, I have certainly enjoyed hearing everyone's comments on this.

I always thought that the apple was the forbidden fruit based on the paintings I saw, then again I am not an expert on the subject.

I have heard it might have been a pomegranate. But I don’t think we’ll ever know this side of heaven. Lol

You got it, Nicole! :D Most people forget that it was a peculiar, singular and unique tree...
Do your best- trust God to do the rest.

Someone else said they heard it was a pomegranate! You are right, we'll never know this side of Heaven, but it is fun to speculate!

The majority of people thought it was an apple. I guess it has been a combination of paintings and what we were taught growing up! :)

I think it's a completely different fruit. The apple is just a misconception derived from old paintings that show the fruit as red. The Bible states it was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil, not an apple or a fig, both of which are mentioned in the Bible.
1 Cor 15: 19-20, 26 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead...The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

I think we need to look that fruit from the perspective of desire of flesh, rather than imagining any fruit. Because whatever God created is good. Though the sense is literal, however rethinking any fruit would make no sense if we do not see the whole Bible. Furthermore, the passage of cursing on the fig tree has different context, though Jesus Christ did not find fruit in the fig tree, however we cannot consider either that it was fig fruit. Rather the context of cursing fig tree shows that Jesus revealed Himself to Jewish people but they did not believe in Him. Also, it is important to note that according to the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus told them the parable of God's vineyard right after cursing the fig tree. Thus, through this parable Jesus told the Jewish authorities that they were cursed because they rejected Jesus their Messiah. We also need to note Jesus words according to the Gospel of John in terms of producing more fruit abiding in Him. So, this whole context of identifying that particular fruit of the tree can only sort out looking at the whole Bible. Thus, whatever that fruit was, but it was neither apple nor fig rather it was desire of flesh that led them to go against God's will.

It could well have been a fruit that grew on that specific tree, and never again after Adam and Eve ate it. I think I like that idea much better than an apple!

Absolutely! Whatever the actual fruit was is not the important issue here. The disobedience of Adam and Eve is what the story is about, not what kind of fruit it was. Getting everyone's opinions on this has brought about an excellent Bible study!

Keeping in mind Adam's apple theory, among many other arguments, I have also always thought the fruit was an apple. However, much controversy hangs around that question.

There does seem to be a lot of controversy about the type of fruit it was. One interesting thing I heard while growing up was that the adam's apple men have was named that because of the fruit Adam and Eve ate from the tree was an apple. Hence the name "Adam's Apple!" I'm sure someone made that up and it caught on so that others repeated it; much like the fruit is an apple! Interesting the things we hold onto from our earlier lives!

I can't agree more. Perhaps we'll get to know whatever fruit it was once we get to Heaven.
