A famous poet of Bengali Literature has said, " All of those who write poems are not poet, some of them are poet" I cant believe myself as a poet. I have been writing in journals since 2006. I was 16 then, my first poem was published in our school magazine. All my teachers praised me. But now I am a flop poet with three complete poetry book, rare sale.

I'm not sure what got me started in writing, other than reading loads of books when I was a kid. I remember writing stories from about age seven. Holy cow that's more than forty years ago - time flies! However, from my twenties on I was writing factual stuff; technical articles and so on. I started to write my novel about four years ago.

If enough people like what I write I may eventually be sufficiently audacious to consider myself a writer! :)

Cheers,
Xander.

I've been writing since I was 13, it didn't occur to me that I should be an "author" until recently(I'm 30 now) but when I look back through everything I've written to entertain others it really made so much sense.

I think I'll be a "real" writer if I won a writing award or writing degree or any writing contest. . .

Lanscot, there are plenty of writers who are earning money from writing without an award or degree. They are certainly good goals to work for, but you could be a "real" writer way before then. For instance, if you wanted to win a marathon race, would you not be considered a marathoner until you won a race? I would think you could consider yourself a marathoner when you completed a marathon. Likewise, when you start writing in your chosen field regularly, you can consider yourself that type of writer. A novelist writes novels. A reporter writes news stories. And so on. Keep your goals high, but don't undercut your achievement while reaching that goal of a degree or contest.

It all depends of your definition of being a writer. Do I enjoy writing? Yes. Am I good at it? Yes. Do I plan on making it a career? Maybe not. I consider myself a writer because it's something I like to do and also do it well.

I enjoyed writing as a child and got great support from teachers and parents. The move to become a published writer came with retirement from a job with assured income. It was my mother who told me I had to write my first book, to expose a sad-but-true story of injustice. That was nine years ago. Now I write for fun, and publish to be read.

I have been writing since I was eight years old. It all began when I have learned in class that the Philippines' national hero, Jose Rizal, started writing verses at the same age.

Writing is simply a form of venting for me, be that happy or negative venting. Because of this, I rarely finish my books because that venting mod doesn't last long enough to get it completed. But I do consider myself a writer I suppose. I've been writing stories since I could read them. I've never been published since I never finish my work, but maybe someday I can call myself a published author! :)
