I listen to classical, sometimes Dylan Mama & Papas, Pumpkins or Bush help me for some reason get out of a creative funk. Also when writing about the past I listen to music from that time period to help. I do remember one time I ended up typing all lyrics to Tonight Tonight, in the middle of my chapter without realizing it.

I love music...but have to keep to classical pieces or silence when I write. Otherwise end up just listening to the lyrics...~laughing~

I have to have music to write. I can do without it for rewrites, but not for the first draft. I have an entire play list specifically for writing and will switch songs depending on the scene and mood of what what I'm writing. Almost every song has lyrics and I'm quite capable of singing along with the lyrics even while totally absorbed in my story and typing it out on the screen. The lyrics never get in the way.

I have to listen to music to think, it's a fact. When I'm writing I usually play an artist whose music I know by heart, and I have a large amount of.

I can't listen to anything when I write, I'm so invested in what I'm writing that any sound just bothers me, its like a phone ringing when you're in the theater watching a movie.

Hey I just love to listen music while doing some other work (it might be at work in office or writing at home) because it will just keep on relieving us from the mind stress and also help us stay boosted with enough energy.

I always keep it silent when I write. Long pauses, staring out the window. I have to go where I'm writing in my head and stay there while I type... music would just keep pulling me back to my desk.

Absolutely. I can write in silence, but the end product is always terrible. Music moves me, motivates me, keeps me on track.

I have even made playlists for some of my characters, to listen to when I need inspiration or a reminder of how that character thinks/feels.

I almost always listen to music when I write; however, what I am feeling at the time decides what music I listen to. I usually don't listen to country or pop music because it is too distracting. I find myself listening to more indie, rock, alternative, classical, and certain rap artists while I write. If I don't write with music, I don't feel like my whole heart is in whatever I am writing, partially because I cannot dig deep into everything that I am feeling (the music helps bring everything out), and partially because I find myself both distracted and at more writer's block than I normally come across.

Like a number of people here, when I write I can't have anything distracting. And much of what I listen to will distract me. I find myself humming the lyrics, and once even wrote a line from a song right where a conversation was supposed to happen. At the same time, I can't write in silence.

I learned that music like Enya, other Celtic-related music, even with words, don't distract me at all. Go fig.
