A Long Dark Rainbow is a romantic novel by Michael Tappenden. It revolves around the friendship between Alexander James and Samantha Reagan in their seventies. Alexander James is a retired art historian who lives alone. He chose to live his life as a bachelor. He tries his best to forget about his tragic past but it comes back to haunt him at night. The world of art comforts him. He had met Samantha Reagan briefly in their younger years. Forty years later, they meet again in a charity shop where Samantha works. Samantha is divorced and lonely. They become good friends and decide to take their friendship to the next level.

When I decided to read this book, I was keen to know how the relationship between the protagonists would unfold. I must admit that I was intrigued by how Alexander and Samantha decided to forego their past and start a new life together. Indeed, age is not an obstacle when it comes to love. I also admired how open they were to each other. Alexander was able to have peace of mind after sharing the secret about his tragic past with Samantha.

The author did a marvelous job at the description of scenes, emotions, and events. I had a clear mental picture of the whole story as it progressed. The author also described the thoughts of characters from time to time. I could feel and understand the emotions of each character. Character development was also done skillfully.

I agree that readers should approach this book with an open mind. There are a lot of things that the reader can learn from the story. The conversations between Alexander and Samantha are interesting and quite informative. They share secrets, talk about their past lives, and discuss their journey over the years. What's more fascinating is how they continue to discover more about themselves despite their age.

I give A Long Dark Rainbow 4 out of 4 stars. I believe that it was professionally edited since there were no errors. The only criticism I have about this book is that the story was somehow incomplete. I was left wondering what happened to Alexander's long-lost children. I wanted to know who adopted them and how they were brought up. I had hoped that Alexander would make an effort to look for them. I would like to recommend this book to adults who are interested in romantic novels.
