Many talented players do not always succeed. This statement is true for all sports, especially tennis. Some players do not even make it past their local competitions despite being so talented. Patrick Deigan's book, Coaching and Learning Tennis Basics 4: The Road to College Tennis, is the exact guide a talented tennis player needs to take the next step in their career. Whether you are focussed on your own individual goals as a player or in those of your players as a coach, there is plenty you can learn from this book.

Patrick covers a wide range of aspects in his book, from tennis equipment to more advanced aspects like tactics. He starts with a discussion on rackets, the different types available in the market, and highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each type. He advises on the right racket for different age groups with different preferences. He talks about basic aspects such as ball service, volleys and shots. How best to execute these and the circumstances when each is necessary. He gives step by step illustrations and descriptions on ball feeding techniques and even avails to coaches the best drills to use when training these. He also discusses pre-match preparations and gives important tips on how best to get ready for a game of tennis.

I absolutely loved this book. The language used is simple and easy to comprehend. While most coaching books tend to use complex and difficult wordings to relay their messages, this book does not. The author actually describes it as tennis in a layman's language, a description I fully agree with. Its clarity makes it suitable for both children and adults interested in learning about the game. I loved the use of images in the book to exemplify the author's points. The images were not only valuable in driving the points home but were also so inspirational. A good trainer says the right things at the right time with a lot of visual illustrations, Patrick does exactly that. I actually felt like I was physically discussing the game with the coach as I read through the chapters. Trust me, with Patrick's style of writing, these things stick to your head. His descriptions and illustrations are impeccable.

I particularly loved the forehand and backhand sections. Like the author says, this is where all the fun begins. Being a tennis fan and not a player, these are things I just enjoy seeing on the screen and you can, therefore, imagine the joy I had in actually seeing them being illustrated. Learning how to physically do them through this guide was my best moment of reading this book. I found nothing I disliked about this book. The editing was professionally done as I noticed very few errors. The language was also friendly and suitable for all ages.

I give this book a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The author is an expert at what he does and is just the right person to learn from. I'd recommend the book to all lovers, players and trainers of tennis. Like they say, no matter how good you get, you can always be better. This book gives you the chance to do exactly that, get better.

It's great that the author uses terms that we all can understand because sometimes I shy away from this kind of book just because of all the terminology.
Thank yous for such an enthusiastic review!
