Sci-fi just requires technology that doesn't exist now or didn't exist at the time of writing. The Stepford Wives is classed as sci-fi
I loathe dystopian stories as well The only thing that irritates me faster than robots/AI is a book that says, "The future's going to be a terrible place to live!" I don't believe that's true, and I've no interest in writing it, which is why Project Tau and the other books in the series are 100% non-dystopian People in my books are normal; they do grocery shopping, they live and watch movies just like we do. They just do it a long time after we're doing it I write sci-fi realism
I think there's also an unfortunate trend for people to assume that "bad things happening to MC in future" = "yet another dystopian setting. Yawn." The universe has to suck for everyone, not just a select few characters, for a work to be classed as dystopian
