Hi everyone! Hubby finally uncovered several boxes of my books that were mistakenly put in storage room and got buried for about a year. Looking through them, I came across a 4 part autobiography series I picked up a couple of years ago. It's been a while since last I read them, but I do remember them to enthralling, touching and real page turners.

The first book is called Twopence to Cross the Mersey, by Helen Forrester. Unfortunately I can't provide even a summary for it as I haven't acquired it yet. I know, weird to get the other three first. Not really sure how that happened. Anyway, Forrester writes of her life growing up in the poorest of poor Liverpool in the 1930s, and this series first printing was in the late 1970s and very early 80's.

Helen, along with six younger siblings, are the children of two dysfunctional and under-achieving parents who neglect them and leave it to Helen to raise the younger children in unimaginable difficult circumstances and poverty. Books 2 to 4 are called:
  • Liverpool Miss
    Lime Street at Two
    By the Waters of Liverpool
Below is a blurb from the back cover of Liverpool Miss:

The Forrester family are slowly winning their fight for survival. But fourteen-year-old Helen's personal battle is to persuade her parents to allow her to to earn her own living, to lead her own life after years of neglect and inadequate schooling while she cared for her six younger brothers and sisters. Her untiring struggles against illness caused by severe malnutrition and dirt (she has her first bath in four years), and above all the selfish demands of her parents, make this story of amazing courage and perseverance both heartbreaking and inspiring.

All books these books are long since out in paperbook. Cheers.

Helen has a book called Liverpool Daisy. Is that in the same series?
Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.

No, that's one of her fiction stories. This series is an autobiography about growing up in Liverpool in the thirties with a very dysfunctional family.
