The historical fiction book, Sandra Eden's War by Mike Low, entertained me with an aspect of World War II that I had thought little about before reading it. Set in France shortly before the D Day invasion by the Allied forces, this book chronicles the escapades of the French Resistance and the SOE (British Special Operations Executive) agents, whose sole purpose was to thwart the German Nazi army in their desire to control the world.

The book begins with Sandra Eden, a gutsy SOE agent, parachuting into France. When her parachute fails to open, instead of falling to her death as the helicopter pilot fears, Sandra falls through the branches of some nearby trees and ends up merely shaken and bruised. Another female agent is sent, who thinks that Sandra is an imposter masquerading as Sandra Eden since she was reported dead. Thus begins the first of many close encounters that Sandra endures in “her” war against the Nazis. She proves to be equal to the tasks she is given, despite the sexist beliefs of some of the French Resistance fighters. What ensues is a series of plots executed by Sandra, Michel, a resistance fighter associate, and various other Frenchmen. From bombing bridges to daring rescues of other agents, to being captured herself, this exciting book lacks nothing in the suspense department.

If I was to fault the book for anything, it would be the simplistic style of writing. The content is quite adult, but the short sentences and vocabulary give me the impression of a Young Adult novel, or possibly one written for middle school students. However, it is a truly enjoyable book for most ages and reading levels. There is no erotic content and very little vulgar language, although some of the scenes in the war become quite graphic in their violent intensity.

The thing I like the most about the book is its plot. It seems to be very true to the actual events that happened during World War II in France. The setting is authentic and introduces the reader to the culture, food, clothing, and landscape of the country of France during this time period, even down to the conversations written in French and then translated into English for the reader. The characterizations are very nicely done as well, especially those of Sandra and Michel. This book includes true events such as D Day, as well as lots of suspense and even some romance!

I found only one grammatical error in this entire book, so I feel it was professionally edited. Therefore I would like to award it 4 out of 4 stars for exceptional quality. If you enjoy authentic historical fiction novels, especially with strong female protagonists, I would highly recommend Sandra Eden's War by Mike Low. I don't think you'll be disappointed!
