Yes, if a mode of entertainment, whether a book or a movie or a comedy, is good then it doesn't have to depend on such content for popularity

I feel that sex is put in books and movies because it sells. Some movies and books get ruined because of the explicit nature and too much of it. It can be forced and unnecessary, the book or movie would not be affected by it.

In my opinion, I find the sex necessary as it contributes to the plot of the book. Although the protagonist was on a mission to find his uncle, the book also demonstrates that one can get other distractions regardless of the mission at hand.

I wouldn't consider sex to be necessary in this book, however, it is an inherently human aspect of life. Therefore, these sections might serve to help readers relate and connect with the characters.

Yes, most of the times it sells. But sometimes it can ruin the whole thing

It was a distraction to the protagonist, but it was so for some readers as well

If the author's intent was to show Grant as a playboy, then it was successful by the inclusion of his multiple encounters

Adding more humane content will make a plot relatable. Yet the relevance has to be considered as well

I didn't see the necessity of the sexual encounter in the book but I would like to think that the author wanted to depict the fact that human can still be distracted by natural instincts like sex even when engrossed in other activities.

In my opinion, the sex scenes in the book were unnecessary but adding it was still a plus for the book. It portrayed Grant as real since it is normal for a young guy to have sex.

In my opinion, sex is necessary as long as humans are involved. I think the author was being aware of this very fact.

That us the very basic idea behind the author having sex scenes in the piece work.

Memorable author never resort to descriptions of explicit sex in their narratives. They always choose to portray the highest values that come with a dignified erotic relationship or, when portraying immorality or indincency, they tend to prefer a tone of "what a pity..."
Explicit descriptions tend to be very "animal-ish". Instead, true human relations are divine.
To read or not to read? That's not even a question!

I think the sex scenes were added as a means to pace the story. Especially in sci-fi adventure, if the story moves along at breakneck speed without pause, the readers become tired and plotpoints become less effective.

Having said this, the pacing could have easily been moderated by other kinds of scenes, not necessarily sexy ones. In my opinion, sex was chosen to widen the target audience.
