The Karma Collector is a crime fiction story that will give you goosebumps and send shivers down your spine while you remain fascinated by the protagonist’s charisma. The eerie intricacies of the narrator’s personality echo throughout his life mission and according to his “job title”: a trained spiritual collector with psychic abilities and martial arts training who tracks down criminals in order to collect the karmic debts gathered in their previous lives.

Draden Crue is a humble man, despite his wealth, who follows The Way of the Tao, a path that embraces the natural course of the universe. Crue’s pragmatic and wacky attitude in paranormal situations kept me enthralled. Following the spontaneous revelations of his parapsychological visions, he finds himself tracking a mysterious tycoon with multiple identities known as Mendel Feigenbaum who’s involved with human trafficking. When Senta, a transgender who has lived with the burden of societal judgment, crosses paths with Crue during a karmic rescue mission, they join forces to track down Feigenbaum. Differences soon arise in their detective work. How will she cope with Crue’s mystical traits and the recent event when her own father tried to kill her? And will Crue be able to remain detached from his emotions given the brutality that he witnesses in human behavior?

Written in the first person, the author brings to life the gripping and expansive perspective of this spiritual vigilante who fights against evil men and tries to maintain the karmic equilibrium of the universe. David Daukarus carefully builds the foundation of the story and gradually exposes his characters’ personalities. The first part of the book might put off readers who enjoy fast-paced narratives, and it may be more appealing to those who appreciate a measured pace, anticipating what promises to be the first installment of a series. In the second part, when Crue and Senta start connecting the dots and surprising twists come along, the suspense builds with dynamic, tense moments. Several turning points toppled my theories about the end, and although everything was wrapped up and the cliffhanger for the sequel left me wishing for more, the climax was rather blunt and somehow ridiculous. If you’re looking for a thrilling culmination to a suspenseful crime fiction story, this book is not for you.

The author’s writing style is descriptive, thus brightening the details of the scenes and settings. References to metaphysics and esotericism can be observed through Crue’s techniques of astral reconnaissance over the crime scene. Seekers of the quantum realm could find this aspect intriguing. Also, a subtle secondary theme speaks of the identity struggle for transgenders through Senta’s story. The characters are well-developed, and their ambitious behavior to overcome crises was inspiring. I didn’t agree with certain reactions, but the occasional interference of the protagonist, to directly speak to me (reading my mind) and to offer me a plausible explanation, established a closer connection and a relatable feeling. My favorites were his witty moments when a funny line took place of an intelligent, wise answer.

Fans of a murder mystery that centers on criminal acts and investigations will not be disappointed either. The graphic violent episodes explore man’s more sinister nature from rough, bloody fights to sexual child abuse and exploitation. Colorful language, which adds a bit of spice to the narrative, is used in moderation. The impeccable professional editing nudged the score to the highest – 4 out of 4 stars.
