Title: Invent, Innovate & Prosper: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Inventing
Author: Michael G. Colburn

This book delves into the process of inventing and innovating. The author, Michael G. Colburn takes the reader from the idea stage to the completion stage where the inventor is then able to get see the fruits of and sometimes even get a reward for his work.

In 14 chapters divided into 7 parts, the author takes the reader through the steps he has used in more than 25 inventions of his own. These are steps that have been used by many other inventors in the past. He explains how the brain of an inventor works and says that an inventor is an open-minded person willing to consider possibilities even where others may dismiss them.

He encourages the reader to develop a sense of creativity by looking at things from as many perspectives as possible and asking as many questions as possible in a bid to inspire the brain to come up with solutions. He talks of working with the whole brain, thinking continuously about the idea that one has, noting all the thoughts that come to mind, trying many things and not giving up. He urges readers to keep an open mind because a solution different from what the inventor is seeking may be found in the process of trying many things.

The author also talks of researching before inventing and innovating so that one is sure that the efforts will solve an existing problem and be of benefit to others, and also to the inventor financially.

I like that the book gives practical and usable tips coupled with real-life examples as well as stories from historical figures. This lets the reader know that invention, innovation and prosperity are possible in any century.

What I liked least about the book was how the author shared a lot of examples from his own experiences. I was concerned about the protection of his work and processes but also wondered interesting they would be to people who are in a different field. He could have, perhaps, used fewer examples from his own work and included a few more examples from other fields and disciplines.

This is an enjoyable and well-written 249-page-book. I was inspired so I would give the book, ‘Invent, Innovate & Prosper: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Inventing’ 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend the book to people who would like to learn how to invent, innovate and prosper from their ideas.
