Official Review: Survival: Dark Times by Dylan R. Johnson
Ever imagined our world having a supreme ruler? Would we survive the fight against a dictator? Maybe yes, but I think I'll be more optimistic if we are lucky to have a passionate leader like Sora Trok.
Sora is an unpretentious spacer who delivers goods for clients all over the Nebula Galaxy. In one of such deliveries, he and his crew help save a teenage girl who is on the run from the Nebula's mighty monarch. Sora finds out from the teenager that there are others like her whom the queen also wants dead. After rescuing the others, Sora and his crew discover that there is more to the recent government shake-up than meets the eye. Hence, they must unite with whom they needed and fight anybody in their way, as they struggle to stay alive and stop the queen's evil plans.
Survival: Dark Times by Dylan R. Johnson is an epic fantasy adventure and a sure page-turner that will fascinate and captivate fantasy readers. But I first need to warn anyone who isn't comfortable with reading about people dying gruesomely to steer clear of it. There is violence in this book, a lot of it! Could they have been avoided? I don't think so, considering it was needed to give the story its purpose. So I guess you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. Nevertheless, Dylan's style of writing will have you anticipating the next battle and the consequences thereof.
The sophisticated style of storytelling in this book is phenomenal. The descriptions of objects, characters, events, and environments are vivid. Most times, I get bored by authors trying to describe weird creatures and their surroundings in sci-fi books, but this author has taken a rather subtle approach. The characters and objects are believable. More so, the characterization of Sora's crew is simply brilliant. They are unique, intriguing, and mostly the reason why you will love this book.
I must commend the author for the quality of dialogues in this book. They are natural, easy to understand, and each character's style is quite distinct. It also has a touch of humor that made me chuckle amidst the vicious laser beams and shrieks of wounded combatants. As the story unfolds, you will appreciate how the author introduces alternate perspectives of the characters to help you understand them better.
What I disliked most about this book was how it ended: it left me with some unanswered questions. However, I liked how it made me crave for a sequel. And since I couldn't find any assuring information on this, I reluctantly took off a point. I found Survival: Dark Times to be professionally edited and with few typos. I, therefore, rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is devoid of profanities, but I would not recommend it to kids due to its violent content. Otherwise, get this book, especially if you love fantasy adventures.
