Have you ever heard a dog speak? Do you know what goes on in their minds? If you really wish to find out, check out Tales and Adventures of Charlie and Gracie by Jon McGinley. This book will fill your day with giggles.

The story begins with the accidental adoption of Charlie, followed by the planned adoption of Gracie. The reader quickly discerns how humorous and naughty the two dogs could be. I loved the scene where Gracie played a naughty trick on Charlie, but Charlie could not even bark at her because he would get scolded. It was amusing to follow Charlie and Gracie on their holiday trip where they met old acquaintances. In one of these trips, Charlie and Gracie proved that dogs really do have a loving heart.

It takes a very observant mind to create a story of this nature. The personalities of the dogs are believable. The dialogues between Charlie and Gracie were fun to read. Character development was properly done. Sally, Snowy, Mademoiselle Marion, and Ramsey are some colorful personalities in the story. Also, the narrative is simple enough for the intended audience. Difficult words are explained in footnotes. Most importantly, the book encourages desirable qualities such as love, kindness, and friendliness. Overall, the story was well-developed and interesting.

However, it's clear that the text has not been properly proofread. There were awkward sentences, missing commas, full stops and misspelled words. While the illustrations seemed to have been drawn by a good artist, they were few. Also, the entire book was in black and white. I wonder if kids would find this book attractive in this state.

I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. One star was lost to errors and dull illustrations. If these are adjusted, I believe this book would be a great piece for children within the ages of 4 to 12 years.

I love dogs, and the idea of this book is lovely! A book that all kids who like animals will love for sure. It's very sad that it has so many errors, but it still sounds fascinating.
