Official Review: Ball Gowns to Yoga Pants
The book Ball Gowns to Yoga Pants contains Dr. Shellie Hipsky’s ten secrets for entrepreneurial success. Dr. Hipsky is a tenured professor, the CEO of a motivational media company, and the president of a nonprofit organization. When the author left her tenured professor position, she knew that her purpose in life was larger than academia: she wanted to become an entrepreneur and inspire, empower, and uplift women all over the world. With a lot of planning, dedication, networking, and hard work, that is exactly what she accomplished.
Each chapter of Dr. Hipsky’s book illustrates one of her success secrets. The author walks the reader through the main entrepreneurial milestones: from establishing an action plan to understanding when it’s time to leave your stable job, and from creating a demand for your services to branding your business. Dr. Hipsky’s first secret is to understand the purpose of your business and the motivation behind your drive to become an entrepreneur. The following chapters cover defining your personal mission, finding your tribe, branding, dealing with entrepreneurial challenges, and identifying customers’ needs. The book also includes plenty of inspiring experiences and lessons from successful entrepreneurs. If you are interested in learning all about Dr. Hipsky’s tips and tricks for entrepreneurial success, do not hesitate to pick up this book.
What I like the most about Ball Gowns to Yoga Pants is that it is not about offering a one-size-fits-all formula for success. The author understands that entrepreneurship is a concept that means different things to different people, emphasizing that each aspiring entrepreneur needs to come up with their own definition of success. While providing helpful tips, the author leaves a lot of space for readers to actively interact with the book and the notions she shares. Dr. Hipsky provides blank spaces for the readers to make lists and answer questions and prompts. For example, you are invited to make a list of the top five core values of your business and the pros and cons of leaving your stable job to pursue entrepreneurship, as well as to answer questions about your business idea. I find the guidance provided in the book particularly helpful and thought-provoking for those who want to define and plan their business ideas more accurately.
As a “mompreneur,” the author is aware of the fact that, as she puts it, “real life happens when we are building a business.” Many entrepreneurs seem to come from a place of privilege, where their business choices do not affect their family members and finances. As a mother of two who was going through a divorce when she started her business, Dr. Hipsky encourages her readers to think about the impact that their entrepreneurial choices might have on their loved ones. For example, the author highlights that leaving your job to pursue entrepreneurship could mean that members of your family might not be able to count on a stable income and health insurance. I particularly appreciated the fact that Dr. Hipsky encourages her readers to go after their dreams while also inviting them to make informed and responsible decisions.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The writing is engaging, humorous, and pleasant, always inviting for self-reflection. I must note that the book has been professionally edited, as I only came across a couple of minor errors. Hence, I rate Ball Gowns to Yoga Pants by Dr. Shellie Hipsky 4 out of 4 stars.
I have a business idea that I have been wanting to develop for some time, and I found precious guidance and motivation in Dr. Hipsky’s book. Hence, if you are someone who is interested in starting a business, you will definitely benefit from reading the author’s success secrets and endeavors. I particularly recommend this book to female entrepreneurs, as its contents and the author’s expertise seem to be geared towards women.
