Phil holds an inapprehensible friendship with Wayne. A friendship bond that didn´t originate from love, loyalty, or trust. Philip thinks Wayne is following him like an unwanted shadow, yet he always backs him up. And when Wayne is involved in a heinous crime, Phil is eager to help him, even when his own soul is on stake.

Written in the first person, Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) is a play on the past and present filaments. When some old childhood friends are facing an outrageous danger driven to them by Tyrone, Wayne´s brother, reminiscences of the past had found their ways into Phil´s mind as he puts everything on hold to protect Wayne from his brother and his memory.

Along with Phil´s journey, he takes the lid off what happened in the past, the stone that fell in water to form today´s waves. Phil recalls their third friend, Stevie, and his memorable traumatic death that tied their destinies together eternally. He recalls pictures from the past accompanied him through his life and discovers the guilt Wayne held in his heart since then.

Barry Litherland was incredibly successful in choosing to narrate the story through as genuine and well-developed character as Phil is. Throughout the novel, I was captivated by how real Phil both acted and reacted. His humorous narration, cowardice, and spontaneous behavior, all spoke out of the authentic personality Litherland managed to create. Moreover, through the chapters, Barry Litherland developed a beautifully weaved storyline. The story flowed in a fast-paced manner. Alongside with it, the characters progressed reasonably in a realistic way.

What I didn´t like about the novel was the profanity that appeared in almost every chapter of it. Although cursing and swearing fitted Wayne´s character and his background, it was excessive for me, and due to this, the reader´s attention is expected.

If you love mystery, crime, and fast-paced novels, this book is perfectly fit for you. It is a bildungsroman novel, which deals with the main character´s past and its effect in the present. This style of writing lightened the plot and provided a showed rather than written explanation for some of the characters´ manners. However, because of the profanity, minors are not advised to read it.

Waves Break (on Unknown Shores) exceeded all of the expectations I set formerly. It was professionally edited and did not contain any erotic scenes. Luckily, the excessive usage of profanity didn´t outbalance the well-constructed mystery. Due to that, the novel deserved a perfect rating of 4 out of 4.
