Review by Ana Victoria2002 -- We are Voulhire: A New Arr...
There are two kingdoms very different from each other. Cosmos is the physical world, the one we are always in touch with. But there is a second one that holds much more than just mundane characteristics. Caromentis is the kingdom with magical beings that inhabitants of Cosmos only hear of. However, there are people in Cosmos who are in touch with the Caromentis kingdom. Some in the physical world praise, even worship such powerful men and claim that they influence the Cosmos from their seats in Caromentis, in a way similar to gods. Magic is an invasion of Caromenis to our world. A land corrupted with dark lords who seek to gain power, a king who wants to preserve peace among his subjects with lies and a main character who wants to change his life. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is your next page-turner filled with adventures.
The author's writing style is delightful. The way he organizes his entire narration and sort of writes in a way that reassembles poetry is stunning and very original in my opinion. It makes the entire story easier to read since it has a natural flow that allows the reader to immerse themselves in the plot and its magical world. Besides, all the chapters are crafted with the same care and amount of detail. It might be kind of dumb but I enjoyed how each chapter has a title instead of a number. It gave the book a little bit more of originality and prepared the reader for what the chapter contains. It is a little heads up to know that perhaps you are about to target the end of the story.
What I enjoyed the most was how each character was developed and the relationship among them, particularly the relationship between King Wilhelm and Chancellor Maido. It made my stomach churn at times. The way both characters are shaped and how different they are from each other is amazing. Maido is despicable and I had never encountered such a vile character in any fiction book. It twisted the story and allowed readers to have a common enemy. However, my dislike towards him did not transcend to the entire plot and my reading was not tainted with this sense of disgust.
The subtle amount of horror elements in the story is an interesting resource to create mystery in the story. The writer created a universe that seems like a fairy tale but that also contains some elements that are gruesome and even a little scary, like the experiments on children, dark magic, and some characters that overall give a sort of evil vibe.
Taking all of these comments into account I must say that I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this saga. Although the first book is a little short it is very engaging and does a great job in setting the tone for what the entire book series will be. I give this amazing piece 4 stars out of 4 stars.
